I've been modelling with blender for a while, then decided to get into programming a bit...so I learned the basics of C++ and am now learning directx. However, I don't intend to be an indie developer so it won't do me much good to have skills in both when looking for ajob, since companies hire people for either modelling or programming, not both.

There are several colleges in the area that offer programming degrees, but only one or two in the state that offer a computer animation degree.
I still have a couple years before I go to college, but I've been looking into several colleges around here based on the programs/degrees they offer.

I'm wondering whether which would be an easier or better paying career:modelling or game programming?

This is not a sig.

sure, pick on or the other, but don't exclude yourself from either. A programmer with knowledge of how models are made and work, or a modeller who understands how their art will be used later in the pipeline is worth much more, even if you're not a master of both.

it also depends a lot on what you have more fun doing, don't just think about money, or you'll be unhappy

I don't have a sig, live with it.

Dared1111: thanks for that link, was helpful.

Manic: there's parts of both careers that I like,...3d modelling is fun because you can see the result right away, and you get to be creative and stuff. Whereas programming is more problem solving and more technical-ish...

I'm just saying I think I want to go with programming, but 3d modelling is too much fun to give up .

I'm happy to say game companies often employ "tech artists" who can script and model. A good example is people with Maya and its built-in scripting language skills.
