I just saw a great deal for a 2-week old, second hand AM2 bundle:

AMD Sempron 2800+ AM2
Epox AGF6110-M AM2
512mb DDR2

The price was just within my budget. I asked the guy to throw in the 512mb of DDR2 so I can get it up and running once I get the goods.

I know the Sempron I'm getting isn't all that spectacular now, so I wanna ask how long you guys think the AM2 platform will last. The S754 and S939 didn't enjoy the same longevity as the S462/Socket A, and I can't afford an LGA775 solution just by saving my allowance. But hey, just about anything beats my 1st-gen Pentium 4

Processor-wise, do you think I have good upgrade options in the long run?

you can upgrade it to a Amd 6000 dual core which i think is the maximum at the moment

Sounds good, it's a relief knowing that I can go dual-core in the future. I'm really hoping that AMD doesn't abandon the AM2 before I get the chance to upgrade again.

Really sucks to be at the dull end of the performance spectrum

when ever i build a new system, i use AMD, and they always last me a good 5 years. If my last system didn't go crashing down the stairs because I'm an idiot, i still would have it past 5 years, lol! Even though the computer was 4 years old tech, top line stuff from then, i could play DOOM when it came out on medium settings with no lag So, yes, AMD systems can last, if you take care of them.
