TGC Question Competition


Hello everyone,

Our latest competition is quite a simple one. We are giving out four, $20 vouchers to users from the community who submit a question, or an answer to us regarding any TGC Product. The names of each user who submits a question or answer to us, will be assigned a number in either a the question or answer list, then fed into a DarkBASIC Program (randomly seeded of course) which will randomly pick two numbers from both lists. These selected users will then receive a $20 voucher from us, and be announced in our TGC newsletter. What could be easier then asking questions? Please check the rules before posting, and note that the first person to ask a certain question will get a number, any repeats of the same question or answer will not be counted in the lottery. So be quick and hurry! The longer you leave it, the harder it will be to come up with something original!

Remember, we do know who e-mails us via the Support Mail system, so don’t cheat by e-mailing us there for your answers!

Rules:


The question must relate to a TGC product.
The question must be original.
The answer must be original.
The question must not match that on the list we’ve provided.
You may answer questions provided on our list, unless another user has done so before. I will highlight at the end of each week, each of our questions that has been answered and by whom.
You must state the product the question relates to.
When answering you must state the question in full, and give the name of the user who posted it.
Any abusive posting will result in the users number being withdrawn from the lottery.
If you disagree with any of my decisions, you may appeal by e-mailing me at daniel@thegamecreators.com but my decision is final after that appeal.
E-Mailing us for answers via our Support Mail system will be considered cheating, and your name will be removed from the lottery.
This competition will close on May 25th, Midnight GMT. All submissions must be before that time.

@Seppuku Arts: To help create new online documentation to aid users, provide them with a source of information that doesn't mean they have to wait for someone at TGC to e-mail them back, and to free up TGC team members from daily e-mails so they can continue developing new products such as FPS Creator X10, and DarkBASIC Professional improvements.

Question: I have found a bug in Dark Basic Pro, how do I get round this problem?

Answer: Get a TGC forum account and post it on the board called Bug reports (http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_read&i=15), if it is confirmed then we shall sort out the bug and provide a new updradable version of Dark Basic Pro in which the bug is gone. If it is rejected then there isn't a bug and there is merely something wrong with your code.

Question: Rotation in Dark Basic Professional seems buggy!
Answer: It is not! Dark BAsic Professional uses Euler angles as it's rotation system. Euler angles are dependent on the combination of all three axis and in a defined order.


Question: Euler angles are confusing! Is there any way to make things easier with rotation?
Answer: Have a look at EZrotate Enhanced. It will make things MUCH simpler. Plus, the author of EZrotate is REALLY COOL!

Answer : There are couple of very useful dll's that can extend DBP and give you the commands you desire. e.g. Nuclear Glory and Sparky's dll which make sliding collision a lot easier. On top of that Sparky's dll is FREE. You can find Sparky's dll on the forum.

Yes, as long as they are different questions and answers.

Answer: There are a large number of games and applications out there that don't control anti-aliasing, normally this is set as a global preference in your graphics card control software.

Don't worry guys, I'm legit. I was taken on a contract basis for the support mail system, and to help cover the demands put upon staff with the nVidia Game Creators competition that recently ended. You'll notice I posted the list of broken archives on the board a while back.

I also handle other jobs, such as sorting through contact lists, capturing video, and most recently coming up with a more in depth FAQ document. You'll see why we're producing this later on. But as I was writing it, I thought it well worth throwing open to the public, I'm sure you guys can come up with questions I wouldn't have! It’s really not just about not hiring another support agent, it’s honestly about giving community members the tools to sort out problems quickly and easily, rather than waiting around for me to read and diagnose their problems over e-mail. You can thank Rick for the 4 prizes though, he authorised them!

Question : "I have sended the files of my game to my friend,but he can't play it,all it gives are windows messages or that it cannot load something,How do i fix this?"

Answer : "Well,first of all make sure his PC has the latest DirectX 9.0c(There are many many versions,so google Direct X and get the latest) and you might also want to install the Direct X SDK,as sometimes the regular installer doesnt seem to include a file named like : 'D3DX9_XX.dll',why is unknown.But it just isnt included sometimes.Secondly,make sure you sended the *.exe's folder,not just the *.FPM.You can get a *.exe from clicking on 'File\Build Game',This will guide you through the build game process.Thirdly,check if you sended the WHOLE folder FPS Creator exports when making a build game,as just sending the executable wont work."

Anwser: The only limitations of DBP are what you set. DBP is an expandable programming language offering built in commands and support for third party(.dll support) to extend your creations as far as you'd like. DBP is flexible enough to meet the demands of whatever you put into it.

Anwser: No, anything created with DBP out of the box, allows you to sell your creations royalty free. If you have used any third party resources(media or plugins), you will have to check with that third party to see if your creations may be sold.

Question: I've never programmed a computer before. Which should I buy - Dark Basic Classic or Dark Basic Professional?

Answer: Dark Basic Professional is a more advanced product than Dark Basic Classic, being much faster, having many more commands and using the added 3D features of DirectX 9. However, the core BASIC language of both is essentially the same.

If you don't know if you'll take to programming or you are on a tight budget, then DB Classic is an ideal low-cost entry point with which to learn 3D programming with - you can always upgrade to the Pro version later.

If you are determined to make a go of it, then DBPro is the better product of the two.

Question:Is fpsc in anyway compatible with darkbasic? Can I edit my game in darkbasic pro after I have completed in fpsc?

If you mean Dark Basic Pro then,Yes.These two are compatible in some way,FPS Creator creates *.dbo files wich are models named "Dark Basic Object",Wich can be used in Dark Basic Pro as the name might suggest.You will need to copy all texture loose from the world though,and it wont include Dynamic entity data.

No,you cannot edit your game with Dark Basic Pro when its finished,You CAN however,edit the engines source code and build your games with that.

Answer: The DarkBasic retail CD-ROM is sent to you via postal mail, and a download is also available, and it includes some media to get you started, and lots of examples showing you how to use some functions in DBP.

DarkBasic Online is a download only product, hence the name DarkBasic Online, and excludes all the showcae examples you would otherwise recieve in the DarkBasic Retail CD-ROM. You can get a 90MB online version, however, with some showcase examples, but not as many as the Retail version.

Answer: Yes, people around the forum have dedicated their time and skills to creating some truly great AI. The most reccomended package, which is free to use, is called Sensei AI, by Butter Fingers. Search for it, it's on the forum, and there's help on setting it up properly in the forum thread and in the readme.

Answer: Yes! After a poll on the forum revealed that the DBP users wanted the right to use the previously-FPSC-only packs, TGC modified the licence so you can use them in your DBP creations now too!
