I just got my internet upped from 3mb's to 6mb's where i expected atleast 600kb/s downloading but all i seem to be getting on every server i find is 300-400kb/s can anyone point me to a server where they might have no download speed limits?

Plus for my router should i change the duplex mode from 10mb half to 10mb full?

Well, you got 5006 on the second one, so you have been upgraded... Some network links are just slower than others.

It also depends on how fast the server you are downloading from allows if I am not mistake. Some have speed caps for bandwidth reasons.

Any ISP will tell you "up to 6Mb" I have an 8 Mb connection but more often then not it performs around 2 - 3Mb, on a good day I'll get between 5 and 6. These connections are shared around your local area, depending on the user to exchange ratio, your performance and speed up and drop down depending on activity.

Even if your connection rate is actually 6MB/s, there's no guarantee that anyone can actually transmit data to you at that rate, or that you have this bandwidth to yourself, or there are no slow routers between you and your download point, or the wind is rattling your phone wires, or there's too much sunspot activity or ... well, you get the idea. Conditions are never perfect.

The only time I've managed to get anywhere near 5MB/s on my 8MB/s connection was when I was using a download manager to download a single file from many (10+) locations - even then the download rate jumped around like crazy.

Try some of the Microsoft downloads like DirectX. Worked at pretty much full speed more often than not. My old cable modem in UK was 10mbits and I quite often got the full speed out of it on downloads. Now limited to 1mbit. The one small downside of Cyprus basically (total monopoly by one company basically).

Cheers

Your download speed really depends on the upload speed of the servers you're accessing. Here's what my connection tested at last.

The speed I pay for is 10mbps download, and 800kbps upload.

I've been fighting with Insight for over a week now. For the past nearly 3 weeks my speeds have been slow. Of course when they look at it everything is fine.

I'm paying for 5Mb down and 512Kb up.

A few days about my download speed was twice that and my upload speed was about 1/10th of what I just got.

Heres the speed on the internet at my Vacation house.
When I get home on Sunday, I'd like to see how much better my home connection is...

Awful result, my upload won't be detected simply because my PC won't upload anything, I'm still working on finding out what the problem is, I'll probably post it eventually.

2.5mbps, and we're paying for 12mbps...But it could be a lack of cooporation from my computer, I'll try the laptop later.

@ UnderLord:

You're unlikely to get 6Mbps download speed from most servers out there as they have many thousands of requests to process and obviously can't give all their bandwidth to a single user.

Also, if you're ISP uses the telephone lines for the connection you'd be lucky to reach anything like that sort of speed. They have so many customers crammed onto the same equipment that at peak times it's almost impossible to reach a decent speed, especially over long distances.

I mean I'm on an 8Mbit connection so really I should be getting at least 8,000Kbps via this test, but its just not gonna happen.

BT is slowly rewiring parts of the UK with fibre, but my dad is no longer involved in managing that project so I'm not sure what’s happening there. IIRC it's limited to new builds atm.

Man the UK sux I pay £20 for this a month ($40) and it's limited to 30Gb downloads a month!

please can people say how much they are paying for their bandwidth as well as the speed. I might have to move to Electronic Arts

Shame I don't work at Manchester Uni no more they are part of the JANET backbone with many 10gb metro lines! When you step behind that router its blowing hot air out like 8 hair dryers lined up in a row!

Josh, glad to see I'm not the only one on BT with slower internet, I got a similar result to yours with my 12mb connection. Do you get cut offs from the internet every once in a while with BT? Things seems to not be performing so well on our end.

If you get cut offs check you're not on a line share.

I had that problem. I kept complaining an eventualy they installed a new telegraph pole in the street and now the problem is solved.

Also make sure you have an ADSL line filter on all phones, not just you modem/router!

There's the answer to the problem, but the problem is, some reason the phones won't work with the filters Doesn't matter, my sister is the only one annoyed by cut offs.

@ Seppuku Arts:

Yeah I get cut off every now and then. I always assumed it's because my dad brings home BETA technology and equipment from BT for us to test, however I've found a couple of people now having exactly the same problem as myself. We're in the middle of rebuilding our house atm, so we haven’t gotten round to chasing up BT to replace our telephone line yet.

It could just be that your telephone line is old like ours, some haven't been replaced in decades.

BT has some "interesting" technology in development such as the ability to filter out all Torrent and P2P traffic passing through its equipment (which is pretty much the entire UK). Once the tech is complete you'll find yourself paying more if you're file sharing, which is either a good or bad thing from where you're standing. I think they’re hoping it’ll reduce a chunk of the load on the network which should solve some problems.

What BT should do is stop the Denial of Service and Junk Mail traffic (most of it coming from outside the UK) that would save a huge ammount of bandwidth!

It didn't bother me before when ADSL was true Unlimited, but now BT put us on fair use limits I'm paying for this crud to bounce off my router! I was so mad about I even wrote to Tony.. for what good that'll do

I agree it could be the line, it hasn't been replaced around here since I've lived here, plus it's a small village surrounded by farm land. Another problem I have is, with the USB drivers installed, I can't upload anything or post much data.

I'm using one of the BT Voyager Routers, It's not that old, we got it when we upgraded from 3mbps to 12mb, the old modem worked smoothly, the new one doesn't on this system, then after a while it did, but since I've reinstalled windows and ditched the old modem, I have the problem again.
