Hi, my external hard rive worked fine, until I took it out of my pc one time to use it with my laptop. Now my desktop recognises it, but it doesnt show up, and on the device it says its in a "not connected" mode!

Cheers,
Bozzy

Ok, open up your PC, and check that the hard drive is in. Also, what sort of hard drive is it, is it a SATA, an ESATA or an IDE?

Could be dust on the USB plug. Scrub the contacts with an ear bud.

Go back and read his original post. It's an EXTERNAL hard drive.

Bozzy, does it work in the laptop you used it in or does it not work on both of your PCs? Also, what operating systems?

It doesn't work on any of my PCs. I mean it worked right up until I took it out of the Desktop PC (XP Media Center SP2). Then, when I tried to plug it into my laptop (XP Home SP2) an error message came up: USB device not recognised, click here to solve.

Or something like that.

Are you sure you plugged it into the *exact* same USB slot as when it worked? I have loads of devices that only work in certain USB slots. Each slot will require the same driver installation when used for the first time, but for some reason even with this only one or two slots will work. And they are all powered USB2 slots before someone mentions it (for example an external drive I have only works on slots 1 and 3 of a 5 slot USB2 hub I have). It is a bit weird.

Saying that, I also have an external DVD writer drive that refuses to work on my laptop, even though it used to, and other external HD drives work fine on it. Put the DVD drive into another computer (with the same cable) and it works fine. Tried un-installing, everything, but cannot fix it...

Cheers

yes, I plugged it into the exact same spot. Even if I need to buy another one, is it possible to get the files off it (all my GCSE and other stuff)?

Whoops, sorry about that!

Oh, and yeah you can get your files off it, seen ads for places that claim to be able to remove data from any sort of drive.

did you remove it with the Remove hardware safely, before pulling out the usb plug?
did you change any jumper settings on the device?
Are the operating systems the same on both machines?

try going into Device Manager
deleting all USB devices
then rebooting you PC.

However if it has stopped working on all PCs it sounds like it's dead.

Another thing I see often with memory cards is that a rouge PC coverts the memory card / hard drive to NTFS and then it no longer works in 90% of devices. If you've done an NTFS format try formatting it in an older format like FAT32 or FAT16

Oh should says Formatting wipes all you files so don't do it if you have somthing important on there. You'll probably need a recovery service or strip it out and hook it up internally.

Well, I got my uncle round, and he said it was getting power to the board, but not the hard disk. When he took it apart he said it was a standard disk, so he'd get it into his PC and get the files off it.

Or, I'll say again, clean the contacts with an ear bud. And if you did try it, at least acknoledge that it failed.
