Yo
The USB ports on my laptop have been randomly quitting for no apparent reason which means no mouse or printer and the only way to fix it is to reboot it... which obviously is a huge pain in the butt.

Well last night I had it happen to me again except this time a popup came up saying something about how a USB device had been outside of the power requirement range and that the ports are now disabled to prevent damage to the device... or SOMETHING like that. And on the popup u had a choice between continuing with disabled ports or resetting the ports. I knew I would want this again since I get the problem fairly frequently and the popup only has come up like once out of a million times.

So I checked the process name but it was only explorer.exe which obviously did me no good.

so basically... does anyone know how to reset USB ports manually?

TIA!

Well you could always see if they are set to turn off to conserve power, or they might have gone faulty on you, but also check around the BIOS.

Your signature has been erased by a mod because it's larger than 600x120....

I checked everything in the CP and the Hardware Manager. All the settings looked good and nothing seemed to change after my computer killed the ports.

I wish I could get the popup again. I tried pretty much everything I can think of. The BIOS doesnt seem to have anything in there about USB ports either.

Anyhelp would be GREAT!!

TIA!

Sounds like a power issue.

Some large devices like scanners and printers need their own power source. Try switching them on at the mains or unplug their USB.

If you have a lot USB items you may simply need to buy a powered USB hub to give them all the extra juice they need.

lol nice pic I'm just using a plain USB optical mouse. I remember it saying something about power surge protection crap so could it be (since im on a couch when it happens) That moving around builds up static and then when I touch the mouse the static discharges and causes a power surge which the computer sees as being hazardous and so kills the ports? theres no noticable shock but yeah that doesnt really mean anything

Just a thought.

Hmm... its not *too* old... but it might be the same one the dog was chewing on. Geez im retarded to have not thought of that... I'll try using a different mouse and see "if the problem persists"
