Geek Culture / 123 Reg - don't touch, even with a barge pole

I was just writing to say, that 123-reg (the web host) has recently merged with Pipex (at least to my knowledge, and I use the term 'recently' quite loosely too)

I'm not sure about anyone else here, but it appears both companies are now dragging each other under; I own a 123-reg hosting account (not for my main site mind you) and it has recently experienced technical problems regarding email. I rang 123-reg, and I was redirected to Pipex, to which I was given a somewhat vague, meaningless, and sarcastic response. Pipex (even though they own 123-reg) seem to "disown" them, and the whole thing seems a mess.

They have a shortage of staff according to the person I spoke to, and I get the sincere impression they are going out of business.

So my message is this: Don't go near them (don't touch even with a barge pole) until 123-reg dissolves completely into Pipex, or they both implode business wise. 123-reg is a now a non-entity, and Pipex will refuse to assist you if you experience technical difficulties with a package purchased from 123-reg.

Anyone else here experienced a 123-reg/Pipex related issue?

EDIT: I've just noticed that this kind of warning seems to be replaying itself all across the internet, judging by the google search I just performed, so it appears I'm not alone.

I recommend 1and1.com(USA) and 1and1.co.uk (Germany) for hosting

If you're looking to move your website come to SpidaHost, customer services is my area of expertise. Just click on the banner below.

As for Pipex, the smaller ISPs will always be crap, it's best to go with the big companies that have a grasp of the technology.

Pipex are not small by any stretch of the imagination. Compared to some ISPs, there are a grandaddy in the arena.

That doesn't make them any better, however.

I've used 123reg as a domain registration/nameserver provider for years and I've never had a problem. That said, domain registration/ns services are as basic as it gets...

Same - I use 123reg and cant fault them.

1and1, however, can go suck a lemon (to put it politely). They dont entirely understand the term "cancel"

123reg and Pipex have been merging for months/years.

@ BatVink:

Ahh sorry, my mistake. Still they're not at the same level as say, BT for example. There are so many 'virtual' ISPs which just float on top of the network without really knowing what they're doing.

Exactly why I left 1and1! GoDaddy is the best domain registrar by far. The discounts they give for buying multiple domains is amazing, and thanks to the strong £ domains cost almost nothing for me!

Hmmm... the only problem i had with 1&1 is they cut off your web site when you credit card re-issues without getting in touch with you, so you have to phone them, and then you discover they all bloody speak German!

I had to get the problem sorted by e-mail and it took about a week!

My parent´s website is having problems with emails. So they´re f%$&/d then? Great. This isn´t the first time we´ve had problems with them. Though I did manage to get a free host off them because they forget we had it. Untill I lost the passwords for it. Was only usefull for storing files though. I couldn´t link a domain to it.

I never understand these companies that have bad customer services, simply because it's not exactly hard. I think 3-4 working days for an email reply is insane, but maybe thats just me.

I always try to reply to my customers within 6 hours of receiving their emails at SpidaHost.

But you probably don't have 25,000 customers either.

but if he did - he might employ enough people to deal with it.

The problem is - there are hundreds of thousands of people out there who want the worlds best ISP for under $10 a year. Cant be done - but the service is being sold at that price. The problem is that company CANNOT make a profit from $10 unless they cut back on something, like Customer [dis]service.

Josh - I like your shamless affiliate plugging there

Though 123 hardly costs just $10 a year. The package we have costs over $100 for 2 years. We should have emails that work for that price.

I used to use Pipex as my ISP and never had a problem with them. The only reason I changed was because their price was no longer competitive. I am pretty sure they have been going since before the Internet began to appear in homes. To be honest I haven't really had any problems with any ISP - probably because I look after all my own equipment, Web services and Email so all they are doing is providing the ADSL connection.
I dealt with some domains hosted on 123-Reg before and I seem to remember their support being very lacking. They used to send out generic email templates completely unrelated to the questions they were asked. That and absolutely everything was a cost option IIRC.
