Hey all,

Ive been looking into custom building a PC for more then a month now, and through extensive research Ive almost made a final list of parts to order. But before I do, I thought Id run them buy you, the more experienced users . I only have two requirements, that the parts be ordered off newegg, and that the budget, including shipping, not exceed 1000 USD. So, heres the list:

Case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16811133040

HD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16822144415

MOBO:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813127010

CD-DRIVE:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16827106038

PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16817182017

RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820231098

CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819103751

OS:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16832116202

GFX Card:
I'm at a deadlock as to which card to choose. I'm looking at anything in the geforce 8 series, but other then that Ive not made a choice

So, any tips, suggestions, warnings, etc?

In my experience you always have to make sure the motherboard fits in case, and likes your ram etc.
Once Vista gets more developed I plan on getting Home Premium also Good choice
I would really recommend getting a Dvd Cd combo, its worth the extra 45$

Tomorrow, I will leave you a list with a system that is so much better then what you are looking at. I had the list together and clicked refresh on accident and lost it.

But trust me, what you have there, isn't too good. Look into an AMD 5200+, much better PSU, I will show you a better HD, better case, MUCH BETTER motherboard, and a great video card to go along with it tomorrow.

go to the Corsair ram website, the ram itself is really good and it has a configurator that asks your mobo brand and model and it gets you compatible ram.

Be looking for a psu thats 600w + i couldnt see it say how mant watts it was but make sure its 600 or over

The sad fact is that i can read script, but i just cant write it.

It said 550 right in the title description of the link.
I don't know anything about Rosewill power supplies, but your PSU is one thing to never overlook. Reliability should be the main thing to look for. Not just in how long it lasts but its efficiency and ability to prevent "dirty power".

Just a few extra bucks and you could find a harddrive with a 16mb buffer instead of the 8mb. I recently bought a seagate 320gb for only $95, and that includes shipping!

$40 can get you a decent DVD/CD combo. If you really want a sata cdrom (which I dont blame you for wanting) then it might be harder to find a dvd drive.

I've never used an Abit board before. I currently have an Asus and its never given me a problem and it has a great Bios.

Case
the case you have chosen will be fine for your needs

Hard Drive:For only a few bucks more, you get 16MB cache and 250GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148144

Motherboard:Get an SLI board at least, you will be more happy in the long run. This board OC's very well and is a very good board.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188016

Power Supply:Rosewill is a major no-no. MAJOR. Look into this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104014

Memory:
Great memory you chose.

CPU:Get at least 1MB cache, you will be happier.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103759

Video Card:Get two of these, or at least one to start
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150228

Hope that helps

Why not consider getting a fast internal HDD which is about 50-100GB at 10,000RPM and then getting a 200GB external.

You can use the internal drive for programs and OS, external for files etc. This means that if your computer gets a Virus or crashes, you can format the Internal drive without any loss of important data. And saves you backing everything up of DVDs

I have 2 internal drives at the moment. Its very good for that purpose. When i get a new PC i'll have 1 internal and one external. Will mean i can transfer large data files if needs be.

Not worth the money. Speed difference is not that big especially for an average to even hardcore gamer.

Ok so I have looked over your system that you have chosen. Everything seems perfect. Great power supply, great motherboard, great processor, some of the near best ram, and that case, I have myself but its not too bad. It has its downsides because I am a modder and I also do a lot of cable management and its hard to do so with this case. All in all I give the case a 4/5.

Hope this helps

Sadly, that case doesn't have a side window, which I would really like to have, so I looked around and found this.

I also managed to squeeze in this baby:

Nice, but do not even worry about the 6000+ unless you really want it. You can, to my knowledge, get to 3.0Ghz on a 5200+ but I am not totally positive. As for the case, yeah, the Ammo only has 2 side mesh windows which actually are nice for a change but the x-discovery is a better case to me.

then I'll buy 4 of 'em

I would recommend looking at this, and maybe updating some of the parts.

Funky, but I wouldn't want it. I like nicely box-shaped cases with no windows or lights and no fans on the top or sides.

This is the case I currently use.

Sorry to bump this thread after a week, but I decided to switch over to a Core 2 Duo system, so naturally alot has changed, and I'm in need of opinions again. Here's the setup:

https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=5673046&WishListTitle=My+%241000+PC+Build+C2D

What do you think?

Edit: Whoops, wrong link

I just bought a new system very similar to that. I got the 8600 GTS and my core2 duo is the 2.14 ghz version. I haven't had the chance to really put it to the test, but so far it looks pretty fast. I downloaded the new tomb raider demo and it runs great with almost everything turned up to max.

The one thing I suggest is to get another hard drive and set it up as a raid 0 configuration. That will make the slowest part of your computer twice as fast.

Why are you getting Vista 32-bit when you're buying a 64-bit processor?

You should talk to NVidia, according to them a complete system is 3 boxes, (mother board, CPU, and Graphics Card).

Sry, I couldn't resist.
