I'm sure there are many UT fans on these forums, and since I'm one of them, I decided to start a thread to discuss the new and upcoming Unreal Tournament 3. This is actually the fourth UT game (not counting the Unreal championship games for console), but 2003 and 2004 were sort of the same game with 2004 as a really cool update. UT3's release is one of my highlights of this year and it should be yours too.

My personal highlights of the new game are:

-The return of the enforcer!: Ditch those crappy assault rifles, these things rule (from original UT)

-A bunch of new Necris vehicles: Enough said, these should be interesting.

-No more lightning gun (I don't see it on the weapons list): Anyone who has played the original UT knows that the sniper rifle pwns all. I sort of liked having both weapons in UT2004 though. The lightning gun still isn't the greatest.

-"The new goliath will handle more like a tank and less like a brick": Whoopee!

-The new hellbender will have only two positions, with the driver controlling the air-mine turret: Though it was a cool aspect for multiplayer, and promoted teamwork, the hellbender sort of stank for one man raiding missions. You either had to rapidly switch turrets to defend yourself, or do your best to run everybody over. This should make it a more usable vehicle.

-The shock rifle is more like a rifle again: In UT 2003 an 2004, I wasn't impressed with how they shrunk it down.

-They will only have one "painter". The target painter. But instead, it will activate a level specific hazard like a cave-in, ion satellite blast, bombing run, attack of mad purple cows etc.

New game mode, "Unreal Warefare": consists of a ginormous map which has multiple objectives, involves collecting resources, etc. I'm excited to see how this turns out.

Things that are sort of okay but not the greatest are:

-The bio-rifle is huge: I liked having the bio-rifle as a large pistol-like thingy. Others may disagree on this however.

-The Mingun is replaced with the Tarydium Stinger: Others might not know what this is, but I remember it from the original Unreal game. I'm not particularly impressed with this decision unless it is just like the Minigun. If it is anything like the T-Stinger from unreal, than this sucks.

-The leviathan looks dumb: Just my opinion, you can decide for yourself by clicking the link at the bottom of the page

Things that suck

-No more skarrj, darn-it : Skarrj are cool. Especially when you blow them up and green gibs go everywhere.

-No more Assault, double darn-it : Assault was really really fun. Especially since it provided new and exciting challenges with every map. I downloaded tons of these from Unreal Playground.

Go look for yourself!

In the meantime, what do you guys think?

I can't wait. I'm new to the series, but from what I've seen on GameSpot and the Gears of War Collectors Edition DVD, it looks amazing.

For me, the best incarnation of Unreal has to be the Dreamcast version of UT. It's just an amazing game, especially 3 vs 3, there's nothing more fun than owning on UT with a couple of mates. The weapons in UT are the best of any FPS IMO. The shredder, the flak cannon, the shock rifle - and a traditional sniper rifle - compared to the weapons in UT04 it's a whole other sport. The shredder is just fantastic, taking heads off in ways that HL2 hadn't started dreaming of yet.

I think it looks like a lot of fun, so I'll get it on the 360 rather than the PC - it's just the way I like to play these games - by the time it comes out I'll have a great spec PC but playing with all these new toys in XBL would be more fun than playing on the PC. Even after the attempt at Unreal2 on XBox - if you haven't seen it, then don't waste your time on it, it's just an embarassment.

Oh don't worry, I played through the Lame and very short cheesy campaign and was pretty pissed about it too. At least the cover looked cool.

Your right about UT as well. I can never get bored of it because there's no such thing as "upgrading" to 2004. They're two different games and I enjoy them both.

UT by far had the superior weapons and gameplay over 2k3 / 2k4, but all 3 games were fun. I UT3 isn't just more of the same, but it does look pretty fun.

I loved playing death matches in UT with instakill and low gravity. It was brilliant flying across building tops and nailing opponents in mid air.

Why is this UT3 if we've had UT, UT2k3 and UT2k4? Is there some reason they're just going to 3 instead of 4?

I think they realise they strayed too far with '04, so are bringing things back to the old UT gameplay that we like (barring Assault of course).

'03 had some really cool levels, they pushed the boat out on that and it felt like UT, but personally I can't think of a redeeming feature in '04, the additions like the melee just sucked and moved away from the expected style too much. Unreal2's one redeeming feature was the co-op mode on the XBox, but then in my book any crud game can be saved by a co-op mode, even Armourines on the PSX.

@David R: The idea is that 2003 and 2004 were like one game, or "chapter" in the UT series.

@Van B: All the levels from UT2003 were included in UT2004 (or are available online). UT2004 had tonnes of redeeming features as well though, such as the return of the sniper rifle, return of assault, and my personal favorite, the vehicles. Vehicles brought back the original fast-paced action of the original UT, especially when combined with assault. 2004 was better in every way than 2003 (except the took out the cool team lights), but that is my opinion. I still have lots of fun playing the original UT, but when I play 2003, I feel like I'm playing 2004 in the stone age. If anything, 04 was more like the original than 03.

Everybody should click on the link at the bottom of the main post, there's some really cool stuff there.

What do other people think they should have in UT3?

I only care about those as long as I can hold two of them turned sideways, john woo style baby!

They should get rid of the link gun. Even a bot on easiest difficulty locks that thing in solid on your face and its impossible to get away unless you kill the bot. At the very least, the link's range should be limited.

I really don't care about vehicles, I think they're stupid. UT is being more and more like Halo, just not nearly as slow.

Didn't it have an alternative fire mode that acted like a flak cannon?

I really didn't see any need to buy 2k4, but I did anyway because the servers were becoming quite empty. Hey look, buy our new version. It's the same but we added some new vehicles and other crap that could've just been a mod for the older version. Improved graphics slightly, but nothing in my opinion that warrants a whole new game.

ah man i want my damn ripper as well!!! I remember the ripper disc that i fired rebounded off the wall and sliced my head
The assault rifle SUCKED, the grenades it fired SUCKED and it was just so bad! I want my dual enforcers back. The Shield gun also sucked greatly and im glad that they are implomenting the impact hammer back into it, it is the 2nd best weapon to the BIO rifle IMO.

I hope UT3 returns the ultra-gore. In UT2K4 you couldnt get as much awesome bloody gore as the original, or at least it felt that way. The thing about original UT that made it so good is that it is so in your face and hectic all the time, just non-stop slaughter house.

I also think the Link gun should be ditched and just bring back the original Pulse gun (or was it rifle). Although the link is essential for vehicular gameplay and onslaught. The Lightning gun was rubbish. And i dislike the UT2K4 sniper rifle because it coughs a puff of smoke and stops you making rapid accurate shots.

If anyone had the UT chaos mod. Ah fun times with the RPB Sniper rifle, 1 hit slaughter. And the Bastard (for mods: actual name, blame UT mod-makers) sords. The bots were dumb with them and just clumped together and couldn't hit each other lol.

I just hope that UT3 is true to the original cause thats the franchise that i fell in love with

Im not too sure about the storyline about revenge and stuff, its the tournament, if we want storyline we would play unreal/2. (although i disliked unreal 2 and unreal didnt run well on my old pc )but it might be ok so we'll see.

Bio-Rifle IMO was the best weapon in any game ever created.

I've got a top of the line pc and yet for some reason UT runs in slowmo, its not got anything to do with game settings and ive tried all graphics configurations but its always in slowmo. Same applies to Unreal.

I also just have to laugh at the Necris Tripods. You might think of war of the worlds but if you have played command and conquer 3 you will find its looks more like it structure-wise, except for the C&C's upper arm turret things

Whew, had to get that off my chest

The sad fact is that i can read script, but i just cant write it.

I basically agree with everything here, except that vehicles are awesome.

I think they should switch back to the pulse gun and make a special "Fusion cutter" or "construction gun" that everybody starts with on vehicle levels and is only used for repairing vehicles and constructing power nodes.

Actually, they're calling it UT3 because it uses the Unreal 3 engine. They wanted to keep those in sync (at least that's what I heard).

Unreal 2 was nothing compared to the first. I remember playing Unreal using Glide, because that's what it was designed to run on. My friend, who had a TNT2 Ultra, ran the game in OGL with a 3rd party driver and the graphics were much better. I was somewhat upset, until his card melted from a malfunctioning fan.

I liked the shield gun in 2k3. I could get more kills in DM on Rankin with that than any other weapon.

All this talk of Unreal makes me wanna go install the original. I wonder if it'll even work right on newer hardware?

What are your 5 favourite UT weapons
mine are:
1. Bio-Rifle
2. Impact hammer
3. Flak Cannon
4. Rocket launcher alt-fire grenades
5. Sniper Rifle

Well my hardware is fairly new (X1900GT) but it runs in slow motion and i cant fix it

The sad fact is that i can read script, but i just cant write it.

1. redeemer
2. flak cannon
3. shock rifle
4. sniper rifle
5. Rocket Launcher

I would put the instagib at the top, but I don't think that counts.

@DieRider: Maybe you have the game speed set to 50%

As a quick question, who would buy UT3 as soon as it comes out. I would.
