Hey guys, I've just got a quick question about what I think is a hardware problem. I built my own computer early march, but there's a problem that's driven me insane lately. Every time the computer shuts down, it will boot itself up again about 10 seconds later unless I switch off the power supply (it's not just a reboot, it's too long of a wait and it's completely off). But when I switch the power supply back on, it won't turn on until I push the power button. It's frustrating because if I happen to leave the computer while it's shutting down, it will just start up again and I have to shut it down all over again. So I was just wondering if anyone knew what the problem could be, maybe the bios? I checked in the bios but couldn't find anything that might be the problem. So if anyone's got an idea what it might be and how to fix it, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

The only thing that comes to mind is the one of 2 things is happening. You might check your bios for a WoL (wake on lan) setting and ensure it is disabled or turned off. Secondly, you might double check the wiring going to the power switch/jumper section on your motherboard. You can try to disconnect the power momentary switch and short it manually to see if it is the wiring or a bad switch. If it isn't one of these two, I am at a loss. Perhaps someone else might have an idea?

It's a setting in the bios with a name like...

what to do if there has been a power failuer? <Resurect> or <reboot> or <restart>

and it needs to be set to <do nothing>

I used to have it driving me insane too

Yep Definately sounds like a bios setting, or jumper (most likely a setting though, as jumpers are used less now).

My setup did that when I installed Suse Linux (and subsequently updated the BIOS which added a "Resume On Power Failure" option). I thought it was a shutdown problem (like the old win98 shutdown issue) or a "Wake on Lan".

Can you give us the manufacturer and model of your motherboard? This might be a good time to see if there are newer Bios updates for your board.

Okay, thanks guys! I'll give the bios another look to see if I can find anything once I get a chance to reboot.

My motherboard is a ECS GeForce 6100SM-M. I was assuming it wouldn't need any updates since it's pretty new, but I'll be sure to look into that. Thanks again!
