Yes it costs money, and I agree it can be a bit expensive. It doesn't continually crash unless you install dodgy software, or use it wrong. It can crash on occasion however, it's not perfect. As for it having a lot of viruses - why does that make it a bad OS? It just means that malware writers like to target the most popular OS.
I've tried Ubuntu, and I still say I prefer Windows. Partially because it can play PC games, but also because it has very good driver support. I compiled an example that uses a popular 3D engine, and under Ubuntu it runs at a fraction of the speed that it does on Windows, even when I have the latest drivers. Of course this might be NVIDIA's fault for making crappy Linux drivers.
