hi all
i was woundering what the most expensive software was, so i had the idea to create a thread thats sort of a competeion on who can find the most expensive software (not including source code)

try to beat this...

$350,000 + $50,000 per extra system + 3% royalties- Unreal 2 Engine (Dunno what Unreal 3 engine is yet, haven't checked) [edit] Got the price wrong

The license should be thing to be considering here.
Anyone can obtain the software, but having the rights to use it legally is where the money comes in...

and yeah, i thought facerobot was much cheaper than that...

Technically any piece of software you're purchasing a license for, hence the End-User license you see in the installation, when you buy a game, you are licensed to play it, but not to redistribute copies of it etc.

ILM Maya .. £1.8mil per title per platform
Can't remember the actual name of the software, so someone who's interest check the dev diaries from "The Force Unleashed" as they mention it there. They're making a cut-down version for game development on their next-generation titles.
It was originally a heavily modified version of Maya though, extremely beautiful to work with too.

I love the DMM stuff that is supposed to go into "The Force Unleashed". Unfortunately, I don't think a PS2 is going to last very long trying to render it.

Just found something even more expensive, took me a minute after finally reaching a score of 21.5 million on windows pinball.

£1,952,000 for 3ds Max for a full sized business building.
