Hey,

This has really been bugging me this past week or so, the forums take stupid amounts of time to post or edit anything, this morning I timed it; it took 16seconds to post, and 11 seconds to edit that same post. Just now it took over 60seconds to post from which I manually refreshed the page due to it taking far too long. There seems to be immense lag starting from 10PM my time which resides for a few hours, during this time the forums either fail to work or take ages, also this isn't just a local issue as I've talked to many users who have the same problems. During these times the online count isn't that huge compared to others so I don't understand what the deal is, are the forums getting DOS attacked at certain hours of every day? are the forums backing up to floppy disks? I don't know about you but when you forget to copy a long post and it just times out after 5 mins of failing to post and you get some CGI error it's quite annoying.

I heard a lot of people welcoming the addition of the ads to the forum because they will help support the site and etc etc but if anything the forums speed has degraded to a point where you cannot even use it at times, what does everyone else think?

Same here, the forums have been pretty much unusable at times. It takes absolutely ages to make posts and sometimes I just get a CGI error.

So, when is Rich going to upgrade these forums to PHPBB?

Yeah, I thought it was my web connection (which can suck quite badly), but everything is fine now, but DB's website is still grinding this afternoon. Sometimes I notice it says a different website at the bottom when I'm waiting ages (and haven't got the mouse hovering over a link or bookmark). Will have to take more notice.

Cheers

Ps. When I posted the original message I noticed a problem, so I wanted to edit. But it took like 2 or 3 minutes to actually post the 1st time. Browsed a few other forums, made some posts, checked my mail etc etc. DB then posted the message. It just said waiting for the DB site, but at the end it mentioned transferring data from some google site (had syndicate in the name I believe) for about 20 seconds.

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

Was much slower earlier today. Thought it was my wireless. Good thing for duplicate post/edit detection. Seems a lot better now, but still not snappy.

Scratch the a lot better now part.

I don't think it can be DOS, only becuase I am able to browse the Forums just fine. It's only when I post or Edit that I have the 30sec to minute lag.

I've just tried for about 25 minutes to access this page, that's pretty bad. It timed out twice after about 7 minutes, then said "service unavailable".

Seems to be made worse by the google ads as well. Sometimes the page loads down to the first google ad then just hangs. I wonder if that's the culprit?

I've been noticing problems for the past week or two myself. Just very slow speeds.

Wouldn't be the first time Google was the cause of a major delay of loading times on this forum.

I haven't noticed any problems yet. But maybe there will be when I post this.

EDIT: Nope, posted in less than a second.

EDIT: Also edited that last one in less than a second. (Probably less than half a second)

I sometimes notice a posting lag as well, however what really bothers me is that sometimes I have to wait for about 5 minutes to load a new thread. The whole site just locks up and suddenly after a few minutes it all just starts to load like normal.

I have no signature...

It's flying along at the minute and posting is really quick but a lot of the time recently, specially this afternnon it has been really slow and posting was taking at least 30 seconds and viewing threads was taking anything up to 30 seconds. I just gave up trying to view anything and did some work instead.

Boo!

It wasn't working at all earlier, it said that they were doing updates at first, then it said that it couldn't connect to the server. That only lasted for about 5 minutes then it worked again.

EDIT: Still posting quickly.

I did a visual traceroute on them and I wasn't aware they were hosting in the united states.

For those of you having problems, where are you located. Country and or state/city.

It appears that the oc3 lines they are contacting to are having problems. I never have any problems connecting to this site, but I am here in the USA

It's slowing down for me now, but not too bad. It took about 10 seconds for my last post.

EDIT: This one was fast, though.

Neverending Story 128k version. Don't know of any Speccy game that took longer than that (about 15 mins). I'm welling up....

Heh, interesting factoid; a friend of mine could identify around a 100 spectrum games from their loading sounds (think it was *all* spectrum games until they started making bucketloads). Sad but true. He was going to go onto You Bet!, but for some reason didn't. Can't remember why not....

Yeah, that was about right. He demonstrated on like 4 programs I picked at random. Was pretty good in a very geeky kind of way. Closest I got was starting to like the sound at one point (I was kinda tired) and even thinking it sounded like music

Quote: "Manic Miner, second edition, 1984"
Hah, yeah I remember that one. Wasn't it like very subtly different (think some sprites were slightly changed) because he got stuffed by the first publisher? So he then declared the 1st version was fully open to being copied (dropped the copyright) and made a slightly changed version for a new publisher (so under a different copyright). Something like that. Remembering from geeky school conversations 20 odd years ago

My reference to 1984 and a second edition was highly inspired, I just wrote it without thinking! I knew that I had committed some useless facts to the back of my mind, but that is unbelievable

I just checked the facts, and it is correct

Yep. Think it was 83 then 84 for the 2nd one. Think the 2nd one was his own company or somesuch. Wish he would get his head together and finish megatree.

Well something must have changed because today everything has been fine. And I had been seeing the slowdown each day at the same time for the last few days.

Did anyone get any word on the Forum happenings? Was some sort of compaction, backup taking place the last few days?

Are they injecting another advertising change, like every time you post you have to watch an add? (Oh great, that might just give them an idea)
