DarkDev, my website, has been in production for about 9 months now. It was created entirely by my good friend David, who is Dabip on these forums. He made the system, I added the content.

At DarkDev, you can create an account, post in the forums, submit to the art galleries, and post a team request. The team request system is nicely crafted, and works great for anyone.

This website is not just for DarkBasic, or just for programmers. It is for musicians, artists, and coders of all languages.

Link - Darkdev

It might not look exactly top notch yet, but the system works really great.

If you have any troubles, post the problem here, or look in the F.A.Q.

As you can see, right now there aren't any members. You can tell by the lack of space taken up in the galleries and forums, and team requests.

You're very sneaky - absolute positioning your top banner over the advertising which probably keeps your hosting free

The longer links are kind of hard to read on the navigation thing from the white in the gradient.

Thanks for your comments people

Cash And Jess- Why do you think so? I'm not opposing you, but I would like to know what more I should have done before posting this thread. Thanks!

Thanks for signing up Zombie! Have you had any troubles so far?

Nicholas- Yes, it was pretty cool of Dabip to do that. I really didn't like the ad, but I don't like paying for things either Thanks!

Crazy Ninja- I'll look into that. Do you think I should move the gradient more to the right, or darken the links, or what?

Now that I think about it, that ad shouldn't be covered up. I think I'll fix it. Edit: Just read T&C, I'll go fix the ad thing.

@Xenocythe -
As Kevin just said, there's no incentive to join.

Your site is essentially a framework. There's nothing really going on there. There's nothing that I can post there that I can't already post here and get much more exposure.

You are giving away some stuff, however...
Quote: "100 unique, highly detailed, heightmaps
4 Seamless, tileable textures
1 Ready-to-use models"

Heightmaps aren't very interesting. It's not a bad giveaway, but nothing that will capture most people's attention.

There's no community, there's no incentive to join, and you don't have a product. You should have developed the site more before you released it. Many of the links are under construction, and that's unacceptable for a public release. Many people that will visit the site will not go back for a second look.

While I'm on the subject, the color scheme is pretty gross.

Quote: "The team request system is nicely crafted, and works great for anyone."

As far as I can tell the team request system doesn't work at all. All I get is a blank page that says 'Requests'

To try and be constructive, take a look at TDK's forums, which are for DB users and programmers of other languages (the point that makes them different to this forum and hence worthwhile). This is actually a second incarnation of the original forums, which had 2,000+ posts.

To get to my point, there's no major advertising going on yet, until it gets back to the momentum of the original forum and becomes useful again. For now, it's just word of mouth. I think you should get the people you know involved first, and build up some content. Just to repeat, you need a unique selling point, and some content!

I agree with Cash... again.

If the site isn't fully functioning (which, as far as I can tell, it's not), then you need to get it all sorted out then test it amongst some friends first.

Once you get the same kind of feedback we're giving, then you'll be able to make it much more professional, and release it publically.

You should really look up some design principles on Google or somesuch, because the colourscheme, text, layout, and your site is not only using frames, but the HTML doesn't even validate!

As for the requests looking like its not working, That's because of 2 things:
You're not logged in so you cannot post anything

There are no posts yet. I didn't want to waste another millisecond of thime to check if the requests are empty, because they will only be empty one time, when the requests are first up.

Quote: "and your site is not only using frames, but the HTML doesn't even validate!"

That's Byethost's fault. The page does validate, but it doesn't because of Byethost. I'm wanting him to move hosts though.

I was afraid of that.

Like he said, you are not logged in, so you can not see anything.

Thank you very much everyone for all of your comments and suggestions! Its really great you all can point out these things. I'll work on the flaws right away, and work on the 'no incentive to join' .

Thanks so much everyone. I'm glad you all at least took a look.

Oh, and thanks for joining Shadow Heart!

Jeku,

Well, it's like writing spaghetti code in DBP (or C++) - It's not right, but it works simply because of legacy commands that can be used.

If you want to advance your skills at making a professional website where programmers and the like will visit, then one of the important things to keep in mind is valid HTML. Especially since alot of the programmers I know have also dabbled in web-based work, so they'll pick up on it right away!

Ah, I guess it just depends on what you need.

Myself, I could care less about how my websites validate, as long as they work as needed for the major browsers. But if I were making money with websites and had clients who cared about that kind of thing, I guess I'd be more careful. But for a fun side project, I would say don't waste your time (unless you find it fun and/or want to use it for your portfolio).

I've properly sliced the template I made for you:

It still needs tweaking. No offense Dabip, its just your slicing was a little screwed up.

No offense taken, I have no artistic ability, and I'm still learning the whole piecing the site together (graphically wise). I'll insert that into the DD site now. Thanks for all your help.

The site looks so much better. The free media pack looks good too. Although, I wouldn't let someone download it until they've signed up. Also, I think I'd break it up into a couple smaller packs. Then it would be easier to add new packs, as it wouldn't require so much to compare to previous media packs.

I'll sign up now. I can't guarantee if I'll post much, but it's a nice start.

Please can you just use the skinning i've done. It will be very easy for you to add content to the boxes with the skinning i've done.
I don't want to sound rude but it still looks a little messed up.

Don't get me wrong, You and Dabip can make things on that website that i can't get my head around. But I've skinned the original PSD a liccle bit better.

www.myexpo.co.uk/darkdev-Clear Cache Again.

It looks much better with the corner on etc.

BiggAdd, yes the little bits do look better, and we can change a bit of the things to look like that...

But the way the site is coded, I'm not sure if that will work. I'll show Dabip and see what he says about it.

Edit: Also some parts, like the double corner image of both the navigation and main body being on single image, that makes it not really possible to adapt to the code. (I think)

Like I said, I'll check with David. Thanks.

Edit2: BiggAdd you designed the site and you still haven't registered

You don't need to adapt the code. You insert the code where it says in the HTML, and the boxes automatically resize to fit whatever you have put into it.

The middle part near the cog is meant to be one image, as the left and the right are meant to change in length as the other one does.

Check it out! I've been messing with the template. I diddn't have to change anything in the original source or table layout. I just added the content to the boxes:

That's the thing. Using tables fora a layout is frowned upon. I do agree your layout looks snappier, but i would prefer not to use tables. And yes, I know my site uses tables, but I am currently working on that too. .

Quote: "Edit: Also some parts, like the double corner image of both the navigation and main body being on single image, that makes it not really possible to adapt to the code. (I think)"

With the way I setup the SEM CMS Xeno, I can put it into any template I want.
