Ok, I am at the moment using the demo of Playbasic and having a lot of fun .
My friend has a copy of Dark basic that he doesn't want.
I eventually want to use Dark Basic pro.

How similar is Dark basic to Playbasic and how easy is it to transfer code?

I basically want to know if it is worth learning Playbasic/Dark basic, if I'm going to get Dark Basic Pro within the year.......

Thanks very much.

yes it's worth learning. they are very similar languages. moving from one to the other shouldn't be difficult

If you can get the copy of Dark Basic (Classic) off your friend at a good price, then I would go for it. Check out the current price on the TGC web site so you know what 'a good price' is.

Dark Basic Pro is essentially Dark Basic with more speed and lots more bells and whistles. The core version of BASIC underneath though is essentially the same, so starting off with Classic isn't such a bad idea - and if you don't take to it, you've not wasted as much money.

99.9% of what you learn with DB Classic can be taken with you if you decide to upgrade to Pro at a later date.

Playbasic is optimized for 2D game making and as far as I am aware has no 3D capabilities, whereas DB is optimized for 3D and although it can do 2D, it can be a little on the slow side.

Good luck with whatever you decide to go for...

That's a pretty subjective question, as it depends on the type of features you're using. If you're working on the bare bones BASIC stuff, then you can pretty much cut /paste rename, between them.

However, beyond the basic functions, it's much simpler porting 2D DB code to PB than vice versa. Since PB includes many linguistic features neither DB/DBpro have.

While PB is largely 2D oriented, country to popular belief, you can add 3D support to PB today! Just using the COLDSTEEL engine wrapper (DX9/Shaders etc). You just include it and away you go.
