So i got my email, downloaded Z3 and have been playing with ZB3 for a while now....

All i can say is wow, its truly amazing, the amount of detail it can handle is absoloutely superb, my computer seems like its had a massive upgrade, it can work with 100's of millions of polygons effortlessly, with the new mesh extraction tool i managed to make armour and clothes in a matter of minutes, you can now have multiple objects inside ZB too, the move tool has improved so i can easily change the original shape of an object easily, i haven't yet gone into the texturing tools, but you can paint directly onto your model instead of unwrapping it, going into projection mapping then painting there.

AMAZING

Best purchase of my life.

Dude, I so can't wait until I can get mine (With some help of selling stuff and b-day money), I have played with Zbrush, although my PC being under spec can handle up to 300k effortlessly. But first I am upgrading my ram so I can appreciate its true beauty, even if it means a couple extra more months playing with the ZB 2 demo.

Cool, any screens/renders of what you've got so far? (Chuck in the interface as well so we can see how sexy this new UI is )

Here you go, notice how there are a couple of subtools, all i did there to make the pieces of "armour" on the dog was to draw a mask on the original dog, and press the extract button on the right, it automatically made the mesh, put it on a new layer and smoothed it, i can then treat that new object as a Ztool and export and sculpt where necessary.

Interesting, looks fun, those sub tools look like they'll come in handy, like with certain limitation of working with Zbrush 2.

Now i can work with multiple objects i don't really need to take things into max for rendering.

In 2 minutes i managed to make underwear for my woman model, this extract tool is amazing.

Sweet, that would help a lot I can imagine, the extraction tool sounds like it may be a bit of a godsend for clothing material, hair etc. (Although for hair I guess the fibre brush is more appropriate, but probably not 100% of the time )

its actually quite good for hair, not dynamic hair but really short hair or long straight hair. I don't like the fibre brush to be honest.

Well I haven't got much out of the fibre brush yet myself, but its worked for short haired points...Also: Goddammit! you made me open up Zbrush 2 demo now, I hope you're happy. To hell if I somehow manage to get Zbrush 3 before my exams are over, I'll know I'll be addicted and fail...And that will all be on your conscience for sending me that Zbrush 3 link

I tried ZB3, awesome program, but it is a little too expensive.

Blender's mesh sculpting is leaning towards this. It is still only basic level.

Can't say I've ever been a fan of ZBrush. While no doubt a number of people can produce some good results with it, after having to use it for work on a daily experience a couple of years ago.. it has a habit of kicking you in the balls if you need to do anything particularly quickly or more importantly with intricate detail.

Moving a mesh from ZBrush to Photoshop (2D Finaliasing) or Maya (3D Finalizing) also isn't exactly ideal; usually taking much longer to get a viable normal map than usually would've taken a more traditional route. The price also makes it a little much for something with such a limited realistic usability for both home and comercial markets.

For work it's a glorified Normal Mapper, for home it's a 3D painter utility.. which Corel Painter with a tablet is a far better and cheaper option.

That's quite odd as my opinion is quite the opposite, I've found it a Godsend for speed in 3D modelling able to go to extreme detail with ease, so much more ease than your bog-standard 3D modeller, okay my PC isn't able to go into the millions of polygons due to a lack of ram, but it has made 3D modelling feel limitless, stress free and has taken out some of the complications I have had with your standard modeller.

As for photoshop, I've seen people easily interact with it between Zbrush, although I feel I wouldn't need photoshop to paint my textures as I can do it in Zbrush (Only playing with the demo I wouldn't have that advantage) and as for Maya, I wouldn't know how well its pipeline with that is, but I know a lot of people can use it with 3DStudio Max with little trouble.

As for the price? Whats wrong with £300 for a 3D modelling tool that can now go into billions of polygons with little effort to render, that can render for illustrations, that can do allsort with high detail and ease.

As for corel - how do you compare corel painter and Zbrush? Zbrush is a cross between 2D painting and 3D modelling, Corel Painter is 2D Painting...if you were going to compare Zbrush, I'd use Blender's scultor, Hexagon 2, Modo, Mudbox or Silo 2. If you're doing that please rule out Hexagon and Blender - Blender isn't very articulate for the same purposes as Zbrush and Hexagon is buggy.

@Seppuku

Do you have a link to a Zbrush 2 demo download? I've done some searches for it, but all the links are from other websites referring to pixologic.com(where there is no download link any more, as far as I can see).

They used to have Zbrush 1.5 demo on the website, unfortunately they took it down. You'll have to email the customer support for a registration code for the demo and a link to the demo of Zbrush 2.0.

[edit]

Because I am a whore, download this tutorial to get started (What better way to advertise your own tutorials )

ZBrush has come a long long way since V1, the UI used to be messy and all over the place and sometimes it was a major pain in the arse to use, but now, its faster, easier to use, texturing is still a bit of pain but its still one of the best ways to texture, in my opinion.

As for jumping between photoshop and ZB to texture, Zapplink.

It made any work that i wanted to do in photoshop so much easier, i already love the 2d tools in ZB anyway, but there are some things that just can't be done without photoshop so this was a big help, not sure if it works for 3.0 yet though.

Apparently, its easier to get objects and normals between ZB and maya than ZB and max.

Silo is rather good and i have only had a play around with Mudbox for 10 minutes as my former tutor gave in and bought it, i didn't like it as much as i do ZBrush 3.

And the new red wax shader looks pretty decent too, especially with the in viewport realtime shadows

Edit: ZB is 10x better with a tablet...

I might have to grab ZB one of these days. Do they have any plans to put up a learning edition?

Not sure if the demo of the earlier version is still floating around.

Theres an academic license you can get from Kurv for $349, not sure if this link will work but try it anyway.

I'm thinking of Silo and it's learning edition. I don't qualify for the academic license; I'd prefer to just save up for the full version and be done with it. It's one of the last programs I plan on getting.

Silo is pretty decent really, its apparently very nice to work with with ZB too, but in my opinion you only really need one modeller.

Do you know if they will release a demo of ZB3? I tried v2 before and it was great.
I want to try v3 before I buy it.
