Anybody have any good suggestions on a map editor, or terrain editor that exports in .X format?

3d game studio (Around £6 or $10) (I use this one), Blender (Free) (I also use this one), or Milkshape (Around £14 or $25) (I also use this one).

I personally prefer 3d game studio for general mapping, because of it's GTK-Radiant-like interface, but Blender is unbeatable for terrain, especially with it's new sculpting tools.

But if you use Blender, you might need Milkshape to export right away.

Blenders .X exporter works. If you deicide to use Blender be sure select the swap Y axis in Blenders .X exporter menu. This also depends on what view you model it from. but If you model from the front then you will have to swap the Y axis. You should also select the "Export All" button.

Dave

Oh I didn't know that blender's .X exporter was fixed. This is awesome, it is even exporting a nice .TGA file with my UV unwrapping when I export the .X.

Now thanks to Reality Forgotten, it doesn't appear sideways anymore.

I wasted £12 on milkshape.

Your welcome Person99, I've been using Blender for a while now so tinkering is what I do best. If you have any questions about Blender feel free to ask.

Dave

3D world studio isn't a bad program either. I would download the demos to the various programs and give them a try. We can tell you what we use or what we prefer but until you test drive them for yourself you'll never know or be happy with your choice.

Dave

Ever since Blender V2.4, I get a lot of "Too many users - Please blend again later" (It really says that.) errors, even on a cable connection. It is getting more famous as we speak. Now half of TGC and Filefront are Blender users also.

The only problem I have with 3dGS is the shadows. They really aren't all that great.

The only problem with Blender is that it likes to raytrace it's shadows instead of the DBPro ones, so if you make an entire level in blender, and use blender lights, you cannot use a DBPro light or else you won't get the nice raytraced shadows wherever you put the DBPro light.

When do you get this error? and what are you doing when you get this error? I have yet to see this one. Have you upgraded your python to 2.5? also when you do upgrade your python you need to downloadthe blender install again as it is updated for py2.5. If you haven't done that give it a try and post your findings. I don't know if my computer is immune to blender errors or what, I rarely get an error using blender.

Dave
