Just got this today. Anyone else read it. Issue 3/2007. It's published Bi-Monthly. Sort of expensive off the rack USD $14.99, but being in the IT field it seems different and more intersting than my usual mailbox IT mags.

I am going to try some stuff out on the CD, but I need to take a Ghost snapshot of my current installation, as I'm a bit iffy on some of the apps.

Anyone heard od or use the following.

- Intelli HyperSpeed 2005 by IObit -
The date kind of scares me (2005???) but can it do even close to what it claims.
* Will automatically optimize windows to the hilt.
* Boost operation and connection speed by 600%
That's the highest claim I've ever seen. 600%? I'm going to do some benchmarks first.
*5 optimization modes. retail price $24.95

- Ashamppo AntiSpyware -
I currently use AVG. Anyone know if this is good. It says normal retail is $39.30

VIP Privacy by VIP defense -
Says lets you surf safely and cleans up all information stored inside your system, and installed apps.
Quote: "
"It does not in any way delete any private files nor does it change the contents of user's documents. VIP Privacy knows about 700 app and several thousand system leaks sotring the user's personal data tha can be stolen and used by malefactors".
"

Just sounds too good to be true, especially without a big performance hit. Even with the quote above, I'm a bit worried to install an app like this. Never have before, and don't know what to expect.

CD2 contains...
- CCNA - CISCO Cert Training Part 3, which I already have.

- Wargame, episode 2 -
Anyone every try this out? What about episode 1? Is this sort of like hackthissite challenges???

the first one sounds like what fasterfox does by pre empting your link clicking.
I prefer spybot search and destroy / adaware and hijackthis for my clients when it comes to spyware.

the only decent network hacking tool for good that you will want to explore is nmap bro.

Just realized it's Hakin9 not Haking. LOL! Seems they have another mag Hakin9 Starter Kit, and they also publish a Photoshop mag. Might order them, as the articles were insightful, detailed, interesting, and got me thinking about security again. It's easy to feel protected and take security for granted, just because Symantec AV CE seems to be working.

Great article about zombie DOS attacks, and detection.

@UndeLord,
Ironically this issue magazine actually has an article on AV and Adware Removal programs. Someone mentions nod32, who is currently using Kaspersky Labs.

For my system I use Symantec AV Corporate Edition, because that's what I have licensed at work for my network servers, both MS and Novell. I supplement that with AVG, HijackThis, ZoneAlarm. Which I run live and regularly sheduled system scans.

I also run Spybot S&D, and a few misc. programs to detect rootkits, and specific threats. I run helper apps to keep things lean like CCleaner, to remove temp, history,& junk directories.

I'll have to look up Nod32!
