I've started working on a new website with the idea of establishing a community where programmers and IT related peoples can visit to create and read blogs that allow them to share thoughts and source code with others. With most multi-user blog sites after you create a blog you become another needle in the haystack of bloggers. On this website, I wanted to change that! Each new post that is made will be seen from the front page. This allows members of the community and users just browsing to discover you and what you have to share.

I'm still working on the main page of this website, because most themes for WordPress aren't created with multiple users in mind (so if you join, avoid using the mistylook theme). There are still plenty of changes and additions to be made, but so far every one I've showed the idea to, really like it.

If you're interested in checking it out, you can find the site here:

If you don't want to join and have some critism or ideas, please reply with your thoughts.

question: Why "should" someone use your Wordpress blog over the official wordpress site's multi-user blog?

I'm not shooting the idea down - a community blog sounds like a GREAT ideal, but its not anything 'special'. What could make it stand out from Blogger/Wordpress/own install of a blog.

Just a suggestion - good luck with it!

My site is using the offical WordPress MU version, but the themes available aren't really that interesting for what I have in mind. That's why I've hacked the hell out of one of my favorite themes for the main page.

The difference I'm hoping to achieve is a more interactive blogging community. There are tons of developer blogs all over the internet, but they are usually solo blogs. The author has really no idea if people actually pay attention to what he/she posts. A community of bloggers that share similar interests, and using the design I'm proposing, the exposure a blogger has will be much greater. An author that has more interaction with members will be much more motivated than one who flys solo.

Also, WordPress MU creates a new user blog when a person joins the site. They have the ability to customize their own blog to their liking, even activing the plugins they'd like to use. Pretty good for a free site.

Sounds good - so like a Forum come Blog kind of thing. You post up a blog/article and - because it gets frontpaged - others will see it straight away and can comment on it.

Could be very good. I hope your takeup is good! the only problem I find with blogs is finding the time to write on them!

I fall under this category too, but sometimes while I'm developing applications at work I become so bored that I'll have to do something on the internet to clear my mind. One of the best theraputic ways to clear your thoughts is to share them with the world!

I'm looking into options for advertising the website on a bigger scale, have any of you used Google AdWords and found it to be successful?

On another note, if any of you join up and need to display some images in your posts or just want a place to upload images for forums, I created this a few weeks ago as well:

We used Google Adwords at work - but we use it differently to most people.

There are different schools of thought...
Some people use google adwords to simple DRIVE traffic AT their site - usually the homepage or something similar. Although this might boost your site traffic and exposure - its usually less effective than a targeted campaign which is what we do at work.

Basically, we set up landing pages then bid on keywords which will send people to these landing pages. These landing pages are written by people in marketing and have 1 soul purpose in life - to get that person to sign up to a newsletter or go for a free trial. Although this provides less exposure to the site - as its SO focussed, it tends to get pretty good signups.

I've also seen sites use google adwords for offers - so if you follow a link from google adwords after searching for "cheapest canon eos 400d" or something, you might get taken to a landing page with a special offer on it which only viewers from an adwords campaign can see.
