Lucifer: Sorry, As I Am still a newbie, I can't edit the posts, or post fast for that matter... that image was a little dark, yes, but, it is nighttime after all. A post that is waiting to be approved has the daytime shot in it.

Wow, a whole cube in a black background!

Seriously though, you need to show more progress before posting.

Zototoaster: Thanks for the welcome!

I was kind of getting worried, because it seemed that a few people were about to flame, but, thankfully, everyone held back long enough.

There is a tendency, especially here on the W.I.P's to flame quickly. Basic rule is don't show without progress but I can see how you feel you've got progress. Actually, I think progress matters less than how known you are and SOME people just like flaming at times.

Here however, it was based on the first post logical (as it shows a cube on a matrix) to flame you, and on the second no more (as it has water too!). Personally I still think it is quite little, but you seem to be going somewhere.

Show us where you go, I'll comment when you've got something I can comment on (beside that the terrain, water and cube look good)

With your join date and level of experience, starting with an RPG first would be unwise.

Quote: "Water-Thank You Freddix for the Water Shader!
Basic Land Configuration
Sky
Night and Day Cycles
Camera Controls
Player HUD"

These categories represent .01% of the total amount of work to be done. The first 4 are all the same category, and 5 and 6 don't take much time at all.

Work on some simpler projects first. You'll be more satisfied with your time and more able to tackle your RPG later on.

Its a good start, but not enough to be call an rpg. I would start on smaller projects before tackling something like this. Rpg require lots of time and effort. Other than that, keep up the good work. =] and welcome =]

It was not ment to be harmful we have strict rules here on the quality of wip posts. I feel that what you have is a cube on a peice of land which i could probably code in 5 minutes with my eyes closed. Note that I had to type that post rather quickly as I was needed in other places.

Cash Curtis: Don't worry, I have used DBP for about a year now. But thanks anyways.
The admiral: Did you see the water and the sky cycling? Or were you only paying attention to the cube I'm using as a place holder? I have worked on this for a while now, and I think it's worth the WIP thread.
Time yourself. Do everything I have done in 5 minutes... I don't think it's possible.

Sorry about that, I just felt like I had to say that.

Oh, well then you're qualified!

I think Ill paraphrase TDK on this one;

Quote: "TDK: Ive been programming for the better part of 30 years, and Im still not ready to write an RPG."

And Im positive TDK could code circles around you. Literally, like he might actually be able to program a computer that makes magical circles appear around you.

Quote: "Time yourself. Do everything I have done in 5 minutes... I don't think it's possible."

It really can... some matrix editing tools, a quick water shader applied, and... well thats it really. No offense but if this program is more than 100 lines you really need to practice some more.

Geisha House is 19,000 lines of code and still growing. I didn't post a WIP until I had most of my assets in line and 10,000 lines of code written. This doesn't reflect negatively on you at all, but it does reflect the immaturity of this project. I hope that I'm able to play it eventually. However, it's just not ready for a WIP post.

Part of the problem is people won't follow this thread after having seen your cube and water. It takes too long to hold everyone's interest. If your game does get good, you'll have limited your audience because of its first impression.

Good luck, Shiny Edge, I'm certain that you'll get it into WIP status and the looks on the project are rather good.

Don't take it offensive when they say you need more practice, or that they did it in 1/4th of the lines: Everyone learns from programming. What you now do highly inefficient, or what takes days - you'll do next time more efficiently and faster. Basically, they mean to tell you you'll improve. (But they aren't really good in bewording it).

Cash Curtis is a highly honest *sshole. He's in most of the cases 100% correct and won't spare your feelings. You can usually believe what he says to be true - okay, unless you feel it isn't. He's just human too. Really. Go figure.

Good luck!

Hey Shiny Loving it!
I like the water but if its gonna be an rpg try expanding your races because i think alot of people(probably just me) like creating characters for different attributes but playing as an enemy sound wick.

p.s. Wick=WICKed

Thank you all for the comments, I've decided to continue this thread and update as soon as something new is done.

Deathead: What kind of races are you thinking?

[EDIT]
Way off topic, but, I'm currently in court... and I have a blog about it at This Site and I'd like the opinions of anyone who is involved with the legal system, I really want to know if they can charge me for that.

Hey, Shiny Edge - believe me, it happens often that people do little to none at school. You'll have to attend school as the teachers want it - if they feel you're just there because you have to be there and act brutally/defiantly they can file you for that, but charges? That's new to me.

PAGAN: It is a random matrix for now. Will be using height maps.
tha_rami: Well, it could be that the assistant principal is a racist. She even has a book called, "And you call me a racist?" lol, that's no joke

I've completely restarted the game. Every time I do, it becomes better, faster, more professional looking.

I'll be posting some screenshots this week.

Racism sucks, lol. My girlfriends father doesn't like me because I'm Egyptian - so he put her out of house, is about to move 'far away' and seems to have broken most of the ties with her. I mean, like, what?

Luckily I've got her mum, her little brother, my parents and family and such to catch her. Poor girl is 18 - okay, so am I, but just to point out the extremity of the situation.

I've attached a quick demo of the menu setup and basic camera set up.

Alt+Mouse to rotate camera around player, Arrow keys/WASD for movement

It is a self-extracting archive made with WinRAR, you don't need WinRar..

Use stock media. Take a DarkMatter 1 model and retexture it for test purposes.

In order to make a real RPG, you'll have to reanimate all of your stock models anyway in order for them to properly hold and swap weapons. If you don't know how then you need to learn how. Milkshape + Ultimate Unwrap 3D + Paint Shop Pro should do the jobs you need.

If you're not willing to learn then you won't succeed with your project.

Deathhead: I have huge problems getting the .x file which I converted from Make Human in Blender.. The textures are missing...

Cash: I realize that if I don't learn, I can't make anything.

Would character shop help? Or should I just get Milkshape and get learning?

If you can only buy one piece of software, Milkshape is the one. It will allow you to model and animate. Character FX is also an excellent piece of software.

Character Shop is garbage. Its models have so many frames of animation it's insane. DX auto interpolates between frames anyway, so this isn't necessary. Big frame count=big file size=lots of memory=DBP will slow way down.

In the mean time, you can buy a stock model to fit your needs. Even better, you can rig your other models to his skeleton and they'll have the same animations and bone structure.

Updates on the game! Sorry for the huge gap... I went to linux, but now I'm back! =) What's now working: Main Menu, Saving and Loading, No Longer Random Terrain - It's a saved file, water is now a simple ghosted plain- yet efficient, HUD, beginnings of effects like fire etc.

Attached is a screenshot of the player, his little stumpy arm box =), the HUD, and the fire test =)

P.S.: Found excellent file hosting site: http://www.mediafire.com

Sorry for double post, just I can't have two files on a single post

Attached is a demo, yes, I said demo, xD.

WASD or Arrowkeys - Movement
Alt + Mouse - Rotate camera around player
Shift + WASD or Arrowkeys - Run

NOTE: The stamina bar is red in color and reflects the stamina correctly =) The stamina will rise slower, yet it is this way as it's boring to have to wait ^_^

NOTE2: This requires picture element shader 2.0 (or, more commonly known as Pixel Shader 2.0 or PS 2.0) for the fire. I will post one later without the fire so those without PS 2.0 support can still try it out. =)

No one tried the demo? Does no one have Pixel Shader 2.0 or something? I guess that everyone who seemed interested dropped it because of the gap of time. Oh well, if anyone's still interested, give the demo a shot.
