If you don't know what a Nintendo 64 is, then go to a game store, get one, and get at least 4 games for it, and enjoy.

The N64 games may not be the world's greatest graphics (Worse then the PS2, better then the PS1.), but it's games could very well be some of the most fun games to ever reach the market.

My personal favorite is Perfect Dark, whether it is on the PC (Emulator) or the Nintendo itself, it is by far my favorite, following is Super Mario 64, then 007 - The world is not enough, and then 007 - Goldeneye.

So, what were your favorite Nintendo 64 games, and why?

I think that everyone who has Goldeneye also has Perfect Dark.
IGN has Goldeneye first, while Gamespy has Perfect Dark first. I think that the war between the two is endless, but it really comes down to - Do you want modern games, or do you want Sci-Fi games?

Here are my top 9:
1. Perfect Dark
2. Super Mario 64 (Sorry, but I got all 120 stars. I love that game.)
3. 007 - The world is not enough
4. 007 - Goldeneye
5. Zelda - Ocarnia of time
6. Star-fox
7. Mace - The dark ages
8. Star-fox 2
9. Star Wars - Pod Racer
10. Duke Nukem 64

When you said Mario 64, what did you mean?
Mario Kart 64, Mario & Donkey Kong 64, Super Mario 64, or what?

I love the N64, but I don't miss that blur. When I re-purchased it, I bought 4 games and I believe 3 have been mentioned...

not in any order...

1. Zelda: Ocarina Of Time - Just amazing!!!
2. Duke Nukem 64 - Loved it on the PC, and the game just plays well with the N64 Controller.
3. Donkey Kong 64 - Coming off my Donkey Kong Country elation (SNES) this was just the best in the series (to me at least).

4. Perfect Dark - Just has everything that makes a "perfect" game.
It still looks good!!!

1. Super smash bros (multiplayer only, 1p is stupid...)
2. Goldeneye 007
3. Super Mario
4. Vigilante 8
5. bomberman (they're all good...ish)

Never played perfect dark, I may have to download sometime, some people think it better than goldeneye (gasp!)

They are both in the top 5 of IGN, but every day it changes. One day, it is Perfect Dark, then following is Goldeneye. The next day, Goldeneye is first, then following is Perfect Dark.

They are the two competitors of the N64.

Zenassem,

I agree, it still looks good.

What game other then Perfect Dark at that time looked that good.

Perfect Dark had shadows look like they do in F.E.A.R (Except people, the N64 wouldn't be able to handle that.), reflection maps (Screenshot floor), Polygons as high as most 2003-2004 games (Look at the Carrington Institute symbol in the middle), and did things like that?

Perfect Dark has the best graphics for a game for the N64 I have ever seen.

What is Vigilante 8? I have never heard of that.

Just noticed something, I saw an edge of a shadow on a texture, but it could just be an error.

Maybe they cheated for the N64 and made the textures with the shadows on them?

Raven,
I also LOVED WWF No Mercy. Actually, that entire series of wrestling games were too much fun when playing multiplayer.

Conker's Bad Fur Day was probably my favorite.

Honestly, It might be the only Zelda I never purchased or played in-depth. And I have played the Phillips CDI Zeldas. They were THAT bad.

And now trying to think of why I skipped it. I really don't know. I'll have to look at the release date and find out why I brushed it off. Was it the idea of a confusing clock cycle? For now I'll blame it on Tingle. But there has to be a reason...

You would think if I had a reason to skip one it would have been Windwaker. But I absolutely love it! This makes no sense.

[edit] Correction: I also haven't played Phantom Hourglass, simply becuase I have PSP and not a DS.

I think part of the reason is the time limit in Majora's Mask. I remember spending A LOT of time just wandering around gazing at the beauty in OOT, with Majora's Mask you're kind of racing against that creepy moon. But every review I've read rates it right up there with OOT.

I'm guilty too, I bought MM when it was released but barely scratched the surface. I've always meant to play thru it on an emulator, but haven't got around to it.

My faves:
1. Goldeneye-all night college multiplayer deathmatch- good times
2. Zelda: OOT
3. Super Mario 64
4. Shadowman - what an atmosphere! First 4 hours or so are ho-hum, but really great later!
5. Banjo Kazooie
6. Diddy Kong Racing
7. Star Wars:Shadows of the Empire-not a great game by any account, but for some reason I really liked it

Games are just getting the features it had as standard.

Field of Depth, Anti-Aliasing, Full Reflective Surfaces, Real-Time Stencil Shadows, etc.. graphically it was an amazing game back then, only thing that really held it back was being 360p being the max resolution of the N64 graphics chip.

Plus you can't beat being able to steal weapons, shoot them out of enemies hands or prevent them from hurting you by shooting their limbs. Hell most modern games don't have ANY of those features, not even Perfect Dark Zero. Beats the hell out of any other FPS imo

Let's not forget being able to watch the entire game cutscenes as a movie once you complete, Co-Op, Counter-Op.. god I could really go on about how truely awesome a game it is.

Alright I'll stop beaming on how awesome the game is now ^_^

Quote: "I also LOVED WWF No Mercy. Actually, that entire series of wrestling games were too much fun when playing multiplayer."

for sure. first in the series i got when i first bought my N64 called WCW vs NWO, and 4 player was just a laugh. The series got much better as it went on. Shame the PS2 and 360 games don't really live up to the same playability.

Quote: "why doesn't anyone like Majora's mask?"

at the time the whole real-time world was cool, but to be perfectly honest it doesn't fit in with the rest of the Zelda-series very well. i've still not completed it simply because i'll get so far and get bored.. it's the only one in the series that has happened to me.

Wind Waker was awesome, the gameplay was back to what you'd expect with a very good story. graphics despite being ragged on REALLY fit the story and some of the best cartoon style graphics i've ever seen, screenshots online seriously don't do the engine justice which probably didn't help the selling point of it.

Played Twilight Princess on the Wii once, but have it for the GC. Personally actually prefer it with a controller, might be me being crazy; sure aiming on the Wii was easier, but on the whole the controls just didn't appeal to me. Great game though ^_^

Quote: "7. Star Wars:Shadows of the Empire-not a great game by any account, but for some reason I really liked it"

Oh forgot about that, and Rogue Squadron. Both weren't exactly phenominal games, but they were insanely enjoyable to play, with SotE it's crazy because of the bugs; still definate fun.

One game that truely sucked converted to the N64 was Carmageddon. It's like they didn't even try to make it true to the original

@Raven, I have Z:TP on GC as well. For the same reason, I like the controller. I played around with the Wii at GameStop and will probably pick one up this summer. Just couldn't wait that long for TP, and I was really upset that it was released "after" the Wii version when it was originally designed to be on GC.

I forget how many delays I waited through on that title, but I had it pre-ordered through GameStop for at least a year, I think.

Wow, I just looked at the Perfect Dark and Goldeneye ratings on IGN, and they are incredible.

Literally, incredible, 9.0-10/10 is "Incredible" on IGN.

Perfect Dark: 9.8 out of 10
Goldeneye: 9.7 out of 10

So in overall ratings, Perfect Dark wins by 0.1. Soooo much.

What is sad, is the average new game hits about 7.2 out of 10.

The closest I have seen any new get was in 2005 with Doom 3 with an overall rating of 9.3, which is "Outstanding".

As for Zelda - Majora's mask, I hated that game because of the stupid time limit. In Zelda I liked to run around on my horse, jump fences and bridges, and just freeride on the landskape.

Lets see how Majora's mask fares against Ocarnia of Time.

EDIT: HOLY @&$%!
Legend of Zelda - Ocarnia of Time for the n64 has 10/10 after over 20k ratings!

So here is the comparison of both Legend of Zelda games:

Legend of Zelda - Ocarnia of Time: 10/10 at IGN.
Legend of Zelda - Majoras Mask: 9.9/10 at IGN.

Ha! By ratings, OOT beats MM by over 0.99999999999%.

IGN isn't the perfect place for ratings, but it is good enough.

Interesting, Gamespot has Perfect Dark's rating as 9.9, Gameco says it is 9.8.

ALL of the sites I can find have Legend of Zelda - Ocarnia of Time at 10. It deserves it.

Edit: I take that back, this site is saying that it is only 5!...
5 stars out of 5...

Shadows of the Empire
Shadow Man
Rayman 2 (Prefer the PS2 version)
Wetrix (Also on PS2 as AquaAqua)
Jet Force Gemini
Winback
Conker
Ogre Battle 64
Worms Armageddon
Nightmare Creatures

Mario 64. Wow, I remember playing that to death over a weekend with some mates when it first came out. Comments like "swim down in the lake..... ok, just paddle around in circles you t**t..." still bring a smile to my face Loved that game.

Must dig my N64 out from under my bed...

Cheers

Ps. I just realised... has it been 10 years since I bought the N64 for a stupid amount of money?..... (N64, Mario 64, the Star Wars game and Turok I believe I got with probably a memory card, and it came to something like £470 I think ($900+). Niiicccceeee...

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

The days before dual analog sticks though, or rather more accurately Sony had only recently released thew Dual Shock controller for the PS1. Despite having then, nothing really made use of them.

Medal of Honor was the best FPS on the Playstation, which still paled in comparison to PD. Think what made it so good was the control system, which worked on the N64 controller so well. This said I have played the game all the way through with my Xbox 360 controller (Project 64 DirectInput8 Pluging fully supports it) and you'd beleve that the game was originally designed for it. It was quite creepy cool.

Yes Project 64 with a wireless XBox 360 controller is a match made in heaven. My 3 adaptoids are now gathering dust. And no I won't sell them to you.

Playing those N64 games at 1280x1024 is pure joy.

too true, wish some of them would be converted over to XBLA.
I think Perfect Dark could be faithfully recreated with modern graphics and still be within the 150mb limit, only reason they didn't was because Nintendo still own the rights to the original.

That's why the hidden feature in Zero, is only unlockable by altering some information in the xex and using a modded 360.

Don't use Control Set 1.1.

1.2 is where you use the C buttons to run around, the stick to aim, Z to shoot, B to activate, A to do other stuff, L and R to aim.

For me, the C buttons are W,A,S and D, the control stick is my mouse, Z is mouse button one, B is E, A is Q, and L is Z. '

Venge,
007 - Goldeneye has a much higher rating for emulators, because Perfect Dark takes quite a CPU to run through an emulator, and tends to lag.

I just recently found out that the Nintendo 64's graphics area is equal to a strong 64mb video card for the PC.

With the right adapters, you can even use a WII controller.

All I have to do with a PS3 controller is shove it into my USB slot.
But it isn't very good for the Nintendo.

However, I have tried an Xbox (Non-360) controller with the Nintendo, and it works great.

My top 10 favorites:

1 Super Mario 64
2 Mario Kart 64
3 Mario Party
4 Banjo-Tooie
5 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
6 Banjo-Kazooie
7 Donkey Kong 64
8 Kirby 64
9 Rayman 2
10 Yoshi Story

Mario 64 was the first video game I ever played, and it's still the best. The only thing it was lacking was that it was a bit lonely, there were almost no NPCs. If someone merged Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time we'd have a truly astronomical game.

I remember playing Mario Kart and Mario Party for many many hours, in my opionion they are the best multiplayer games ever created. I got Mario Party 7 last year but for some reason it just doesn't have the fun that the original had.

Beyond this place there be dragons.

What a game to start your video game career on!

I was just starting college when Mario 64 was released, and I remember being FLOORED by it's awesomeness. Really, I don't know if there will EVER be another time when there is such a paradigm shift like when Mario 64 was released. That game changed everything.

I think that when Doom came out, it also changed everything.

Super Mario 64 was awesome, but I personally liked the violent bullet-flying game that took forever to load, Perfect Dark.

Oh, and for those who like 007 - Goldeneye for the guns, you can get all of the guns from 007 - Goldeneye on Perfect Dark. I am currently running around shooting DataDyne officers with an AK-47.

No, i thought the bond graphics were kinda poor. Just everything about the N64 failed in my opinion, I think it was Nintendo's worst console.

What year did you get it in, out of curiosity?

(It being the game).

Some people miss small words, it's alright.

Mario Kart was available in 1997?

I just found out that Perfect Dark was made in 2000, and was one of the first games to have both reflection maps and shaders on the same polygon.

I just beat Perfect Dark again. I forgot that the ammo usage training in the CI was a must with the last level. I had to go back and retrain my self to use ammo perfectly by spending 3 hours in the training area with a falcon 2 and some maulers.
At the last part of the game, you have to have A LOT of ammo, and that LOT of ammo is just about all of the ammo you get in the level. (If you play on Special Agent or above, anyway.)

I just got through the training part of Perfect Dark, I think...The goggles in the gadget-training thing didn't work. I think it was the heat sensing goggles or something, when I put em on it showed the room with the light switch, even though I was nowhere near, and it wouldn't move...ah well.

A lot of n64 games were made in the mid-90s, I'm not sure when mario kart came out but Super smash bros was released in 1997.

I should go "borrow" the zelda 64 games from my torrent-happy friend...

It used no shaders, but it did take advantage of the N64's graphics pipeline to the fullest extent. Although finally released n 2000 (just before the PS2 was released), it was far ahead of it's time in terms of graphics.

So was Unreal for the PC though.

Goldeneye was released in 1995, would love to know what titles you had to judge it against; because the only other 3D FPS no the market was the recently released Quake, and Goldeneye blew that away graphics wise.

imo, it wasn't really that big. It was only 2years after Wolfenstein 3D which broke the mold on what we thought were shooter games. id didn't really top that in industry changing games until Quake in late-1994.

I strongly disagree, it was a great console, a lot faster and better than the original Playstation. I loved the three-pronged controller aswell, it just felt right, and it was the first console with a decent analogue stick.
