I never really felt any love for the controller, but I think we're overlooking Turok, IMO that kicked open the door for console FPS games, more than MOH for the PSX. The PSX sucked for FPS games, except for Quake2, that was really good fun with it's 4-player deathmatches (I had a mouse for the PSX which made Quake2 a lot of fun), but Goldeneye on the n64 was great, Turok was great, Perfect Dark was great, Duke Nukem 64 was great... lots of great FPS games were released on the n64.

I'd go as far as to say that the lesser consoles, namely the N64 and the Dreamcast did more for the FPS genre than any other, Quake3 and UT on the Dreamcast rocked. That was really the turning point IMO, Quake3 on the DC, once you got used to the controller at least, using the left thumb to aim and the right thumb to move took a bit of getting used to. The old homebrew port of Quake for the Dreamcast was incredible, never seen Quake look so smooth, totally reinvented the game IMO, if it wasn't so late in the DC's life it could have easily been sold commercially.

I think though that my fave n64 game has to be Mario64, it just had a great feel to it, worked with the controller design very nicely. I do like the DS version too, I wish they'd convert other old n64 titles too. Goldeneye on the DS is not great, not a patch on the n64 original.

I listed it...

Its one of the reasons i don't like many modern systems, it felt weird not to have that controller in my hand...

I liked it!

Anyways, until I can find it at Gamestop, I'm playing Perfect Dark on an Emulator, using a PS2 controller with a USB connection.

hey, I just downloaded turok.
Strange game...I don't really get the point of it, but hey, lets run around shooting people and "dinosaurs" and other weird things.

to anyone who's beat it, is there a t-rex somewhere in the game or does it pre-date em?

Yes, there is one towards the end of the game that is a boss. But its like a cyborg T-Rex.

You should just buy it off eBay. You can get it for $0.01 brand new with a rumble pack plus shipping and handling. Gamestop/EBgames had it selling for like $6 used.

I have a love/hate releationship with Turok. I enjoyed it, the graphics were amazing for the time (other than the fog), awesome weapons, great death sequences.

But unless you had the cheat codes to unlock everything, the game itself was kinda boring. Lots of aimless running around trying to find insanely well-hidden items. And in the meantime you usually ran out of ammo because of continually respawning enemies.

I got a new copy about 2years ago, given couldn't remember where mine had disappeared to.

Bought PD, RumblePak and ExpansionPak all for pretty much on-par retail price. That was from Amazon, the cheapest place I could find it. None of the shops ever had it in second hand, or even new. eBay was selling PD even second hand copyies for £50.

In the end I spent £35 on the game, £15 on a new RumblePak, and £30 on a new ExpansionPak. That said don't feel ripped off about any of it. It's one of those problems when hardware and software stop being produced. Second hand kit is hard to find after a few years, and still sealed boxed kit is just like goldust to these retailers. So they try to gouge you.

Turok? Pile of rubbish. At the time we were playing games like Quake 2 I think and Turok sucked big style. Graphically it was ok (remember the fog though), the weapons were pretty good, and the monsters were ok too. The big problem for me was the way the monsters appeared. As PC users we were used to chucking a grenade around a corner and killing the monster there. Not in Turok, oh no. Some cop out excuse about them beaming in or some rubbish but basically the monster didn't really exist until you were right on top of it in a lot of cases. And then they would beam back in again X seconds after you finished it off. Rubbish...

Plus it cost £70 ($140) at the time. I took it back about 3 months later to see how much they would give me and they offered something like £5. Still have it somewhere... Also have a new Turok on the GC which I've never played (now down to only about a dozen games or so I've never played. Pretty good compared to a couple of years ago...).

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

Totally agree about Turok. Something that I didn't like more about it was there wasn't a storyline, same with Quake 2.
It was just randomly created worlds that you fought your way through with very simplistic puzzles that often ment jumping to areas just a hair out of normal reach so you'd have to do a perfect mid-air jump.

Never completed it, got bored half-way through and never played it again. Quake 2 was alright in multiplayer though, biggest problem with it were the controls. No settings were like either Goldeneye or Turok.. made it extremely difficult to control.

Turoks control system felt weird too, probably cause it felt like your looking and movement were the wrong way around.

I have a love/hate relationship with a lot of games. Ocarina of Time being one of them, Goron City was the most frustrating level of any video game I can remember (execpt in DK64 when you have to beat the original Donkey Kong hardest game ever), it wasn't hard, I just couldn't figure out how to get into the guy's room or where the cavern was.

I like the entire Zelda series though so here's a little contest to anyone interested. Translate this message:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is, without a doubt, the best! Followed by Majora's Mask

Unfortunately, I've sold my N64 with it. And that's why I had to buy Master Quest and Collectors edition. Now I can play both of them on my Gamecube, alongside with Zelda 1 and 2 for the NES. I still have both gold cartridges, but no NES =(

Yes, I am a big Zelda fan.

I played zelda ocarina of time, so addicting I looked up and it was midnite...darn.

Got a little farther on turok, sort of.. I could only find 2 level 2 keys on level one...lol. Good thing the emulator has the "all keys" cheat. The fog is so annoying, and the random monsters, and all the stupid platform-hopping that is in every single level...

I still don't see what exactly makes people think OOT is so great... I've only ever played it on the Wii Virtual Console, and it can be very frustrating. For example, I was nearly stumpted in trying to figure out how to get past the guards to the castle, and then the guy says he'll let me pass for 10 rupees. I thinking "FINALLY I CAN GET INSIDE!" Then a little while down the path the guards through me out. Maybe I just haven't got far enough (only had it for about 4 days) to see the unlimited freedom everyone was talking about. In spite of all the perfect reviews, the beginning was still better than I expected it to be, but when you get to the part where you have to get into the Castle it just gets annoying...

I did find a very big fault in the game the second time I played it: it doesn't save Link's location, putting you back at the forest every time you start the game. That could be very annoying.

I just got OOT a few days ago also. I got into the castle and talked to zelda, then I had to go back to the forest and talk to saria, who is apparently in the lost woods but I can't find her...someone help?

Did you get into the lost woods? It's right above Mido's house, you'll know it's his house because it say "The Great Mido Boss of the Kokiri", then follow the sound of Saria's song in the woods or else you'll end up back at the entrance. There's a shortcut right to the place she's at in Goron City too.

no one else knows either, because the story wasn't exactly novel, the gameplay wasn't either. it just was awesome.
that said aren't the best games so good because you can't explain why they are.. they just are.

Well that's probably the answer then. But I really think freedom is the answer. All the best games put in lots of subquests that you can do along the way, you can go wherever you want to go and do whatever you want to do. That's something linear games lack. The reason I like Mario 64 so much is it never really forced you to do anything other than collect a minimum number of stars and defeat the three boswers. You have to freedom to choose which stars you wanted to collect and which ones weren't fun enough going after. I always hated the Jolly Roger Bay level, and I never have to go in there again because I can get the stars needed in other levels.

Yeah, I also liked the fact in Mario, there was no order you had to do things in.
In levels, whatever.
Take the first level for example (Bomb-omb).
You had to get one star, break the door open, trick the mushroom guy, or something else to get more doors.
No, you didn't have to kill bomb-omb. There were several stars in that level. You could have gotten all of the red coins, ran past the dog thing, or whatever.
That is the problems with Perfect Dark and Goldeneye. You had to do things in order. You couldn't decide "Forget the elevator, I am taking the vent", you couldn't ignore all of Cassandra's bodyguards, you HAD to leave the president with Elvis etc.

The only problem I have with mario is the fact that it is a pain to play with a keyboard

Perfect Dark is still my favorite, becuase I just like really violent video games.
Goldeneye couldn't supply that, because it was aimed at slightly younger ages, and didn't have the blood splats, you couldn't melt anyones brain, etc.

If so, how many shots does it take?

There are roughly 5!! ways to get all the stars in Mario 64. (Not counting the fact that you can't get some stars without first opening levels which require stars. That's about 670000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 different ways to get ALL the stars, as for getting enough stars to beat bowser in the sky (or more), my calculator's still working the answer out. (The answer's around 5!!! - 16! if you cheat, 5!!! - 70! if you don't cheat.)

How's that for freedom?

I LOVED Shadow Of the Empire. Great game, ridiculously buggy.

I didn't play perfect dark through fully, but did enjoy the small bits I did play.

Goldeneye possessed many many long school holidays for me. Multiplayer on Stack was just unbeatable. Brilliant.

OOT as well, great game.

Ge of course!! You can't beat it.. Its so much more fun than the ones out now where they seem to drag the same style of play out for every film that comes out.

Anyway my preferences:
1. Goldeneye
2. Super mario 64
3. Zelda: Ocarina of time
4. Perfect dark
