Check this out! It is called Photosynth.

I have to say, this is one of the coolest things that I have seen in a long time. Watch the video through to the end. It just keeps getting better.

Awesome. And to think this kind of technology will be used as commonly as MSWord in the near future...

Isn't this what we talked about ages ago and used the demo about a month or two ago? Was pretty impressive though I must admit.

Cheers

I like it
Wonder how much Flickr paid to get the 3 second plug they could ever wish for?

Dudes, you think that's cool, go here to actually try it out

I was playing around with it at work yesterday for quite a long time. Jaw dropping!

Man, trying it really gives you an appreciation for it. Amazing.

I wonder if they have a supermodel collection

I played with the website link first, and found it kinda pointless. I was thinking "Well, why the hell would I want to take 50 photos of one area, just to auto reconstruct it in 3D?". Seemed like a pointless idea. THEN I watched the video, and it made much more sense.

Personally, I don't see the point in the technology to rearrange a few of your home photos and link them together. It's not practical to take that many photos. It'd make FAR more sense to make a bloody video! But the idea that everyone's photos are linked via a computer system on the web, and tagged with meta data, and also the possibility of using that technology to turn 2D data into 3D models is awesome.

Look forward to seeing what comes of it.

I don't think it's meant for someone's personal photo collection

It's more like something that could be attached to, say, Google Earth, where it accumulates millions of photos from millions of people, and you can zoom down to virtually anywhere and get a 3D view. *THAT* is where this is going Think globally!

It's even better when you've played with the technology yourself

If you haven't tried zooming in yet, do it! You can see the finest details in some of teh shots, and it's silky smooth too. Scroll wheel works a treat!

That is frickin amazing! I only wish you could move around, say, fps style, and the images autoload depending on where you're at and where you're pointed.. I suspect it'll move that way after they sort the bugs out.. But wouldn't that be neat, so it'd work like google earth, instead of pointing and clicking, it's hard to get the actual shot you want to look at the way it is now.

Just before I click the link - it looks like it could chew up alot of download, yeah?

I get charged per the MB here at Uni , so I don't want to have to download massive amounts of data.

Cheers

The video is about 8mb long.
TO actually try it out (using Jeku's link), you must download a plugin for Internet Explorer. I think it was a couple MB download. If you follow the link, I belive it tells you the download size when it asks you if you would like to install the plugin.

The 8Mb for the video and 5.5Mb for the download are ok by me, but I'm more concerned about the size of the downloaded data while browsing the images.

It no doubt will be downloading MBs of image data and 3D model data so I can view it, no?

I may just wait till I go home to try it on our normal setup

[EDIT]
Nevermind, after installing the plugin, it gives an error "Cannot find location [bla bla] and we don't know why"
Probably because of the Uni's crappy proxy setup.
