At the latest Star Trek convention none of the people at the learn Klingon in 6hrs club said I was.

Seriously though, I do sit at the PC all day, and find technical things extremely interesting. However, I don't quite fit the nerd stereotype as I am rather handsome.

meh..no gf, but I'm probably one of the coolest guys at my school..(sucks cause I have lots of friends that are girls, but no girlfriend..lol) I'm known to be quite funny...also to own the computer in the face...and some people have asked me to make a virus for them so that when there parents press a key, pr0n shows up...but I've silently declined(by just ignoring them)
Also I started the "random" trend at my school...ahhh...our class is the only clas that has caught on though means when we graduate, there will be no one to carry on the randomness...

I'm considered the coolest nerd at my school...the only real programmer at my school graduated this year(he was also frikkin hilarious..) but he wasn't much of a programmer though...he knew bits of java, but he prefered to use qbasic...

yea...dunno where any of htat came from...

Nope, I'm definitely not a nerd. Sure, I have a Blender jumper, but I really don't do much computing at all outside work hours. I still don't understand networking and all that, and, like Jess, can be spotted out most Wednesday (uni night), Thursday (30c pots!!) and weekends!

Really just a functioning member of society(not) that does 3D modelling!

No, not really a true nerd in appearance or in my mind. I'd like to look a bit more nerdy just for fun.

The only thing nerdy about me really is my programming and digital art stuff. Otherwise I'm quite normal, I don't get into science stuff, I'm not into Star Trek and I'm not such a Star Wars geek these days, (prequels destroyed Star Wars )

Am I the only one who will admit they are a nerd? Lol. Yes, I am a nerd, and proud of it . I spend most of my free time playing or making computer games, and am planning on doing it for a living. I don't think you can get much nerdier than that . I don't however like StarTrek. Star Wars is okay, I'm obsessed with Harry Potter, and love LoTR movies. Don't know how those rank on the "nerd scale" though, and don't really care .

Unfortunately most of us can't get away with that because we don't look like you're stereotypical jock. :p
Wonder why we don't really have "jocks" here.

Something I've always found funny were those who were labeled though. I mean you might not believe it, but I've never really fit into any group neatly enough to be labeled.

Always just been known by nickname rather than "that rock-er" or "that boffin" or "that jock". When I started hanging around with some of the young'ens up north my brother knew, they were still heavily into labels. Tried to class me as something, in the end they decided on "indi" for individual. seemed kinda pointless though

As my personal definition goes ...

We are all GEEKS, because we know about IT type stuff and like computers to various degrees. But NERDS are people with social problems, imo. The main one being always talking about the same thing, and not being able to tell when someone isn't interested.

You can be any sort of nerd. It aint specifically IT. Anyone who constantly bangs on about a subject, locked in eye contact, passionately discussing the same thing, oblivious to the fact the people around them couldn't care less, is a complete nerd. Normally thats IT people, but there are plenty of nerds in other subjects too.

As for the whole stereo-typical nerd image thing, I'm half and half. I don't look like a nerd, but I have hobbies like RC planes and cars, which are stereo-typical nerd hobbies. However, I normally turn up to the place I'm gonna fly, in my Skyline, which is about as far from a nerds car as is automotively possible (and proves I am a petrol head).

Not a stereotypical nerd, no... I wouldn't touch the Sci Fi channel with a barge pole and well Star Trek, well I'd like to say it's crap...but I know this forum has some Star Trek fans and that would just be ritual suicide saying that.

But as Fallout put it, we're all geeks, I'm a geek, I fully admit it, simply because I love doing stuff on computers and I love knowledge. I may like to go out and do sports, listen to death metal and go to concerts etc. but it still doesn't stop me from being a geek, because most geeks do have a life as some people don't like to percieve

Nerds, I agree with the social problem bit...the ones I know are complete arrogant t****s, think they're the expert of everything, if you say something politically incorrect, they'll correct it whilst trying to make you look stupid in the process...although they only time I'm politically incorrect is when I'm joking around...So those kind of socially incapable nerds are entertainment.

[edit]

Why did you want to know anyway? Does it matter if we're nerds or geeks? Because its a geek forum, so if someone here isn't one, lets ridicule him/her.

Seppuku,
They're not easy to keep - I have very straight hair... It comes loose every time I wash 'em, so I end up having to spend hours putting it back into the dreads every week. Some are forming really well, but others are still loose. I've had 'em since Boxing day, so 5 & a half months now

Cool cool, I've had mine since July last year, for washing your hair, you should use dreading shampoo if you don't already, but that doesn't always help, generally you're not suppose to wash dreads, but what the hey, depends if you want smelly hair or not. I've actually only had to put them back in twice so far, so I've got a few stray bits of hair, but the bits that are together are quite tight, which is good.

it's actually more that dreads seem to be atm with most rockers and moshers. was cool when a few people did it, but now it's just getting silly. although that might be out of bitterness that i've got a grade 2 atm heh

don't even have enough hair to style, let alone dread :p

Really? I've only ever met one other person with dreads...well I suppose I do live in town full of the anti-social groups (Chavs, Emos, Scene Kids...) but even at festival, I only saw about 7 different people with them. Didn't realise they were that popular.

Yeah, I've got dread shampoo (dreadheadHQ.com), hemp seed oil / bees wax, and some powder (kinda like chalk) that helps the hair rub together.

I generally wash mine about once a week, but sometimes leave it longer (if I can't be bothered, or have alot of Uni work on).

I know of 4 other guys here at Uni that have dreads (talk to them occasionally), but other than them, I don't think I've seen too many others - There's alot of people around this Uni too, so it isn't too popular here either

well on one hand I've friends from several regions of this country alone, and i never said they were ALL after dreads; and one area I was in (preston) was a student community where if something became popular everyone did it.

still that's fairly true for this part of the uk. they follow trends of things more than anything, so if it's popular it's not a case of copying out of thinking it's cool; but more just to be part of the crowd. another aspect of being in a practically chav-free area is people go out looking how they like rather than listening to some illiterate thug spewing abuse cause you're not head to tow in some gaudy addidas sportsware.

in-fact saw one being stupid enough to shout some abuse when a bunch of us were going to the pub; the guys next to him told him to be quiet, when he didn't got his head kicked in. they REALLY hate those kinda people around here, and a plus side of not being out-numbered by them (which somehow i doubt would stop some of the people round here) is they're kept in check quite well.

I don't like labels, but if you had to stick one on me it'd be geek, not nerd. I have action figures, cool ones, like the swan hatch from Lost, Leon from RE4, a Ghost and hairy dude from Halo2, and Butthead and Cpt Jack bobble-heads. I have a model of the American Chopper spider bike too - that's about as geeky as I get, my 'toys' - but I have a GF, wear decent clothes, have lots of friends, I'm out at least 1 night on the weekend, have sensible hair, have a tattoo, and I love mountain-biking.

Geek and Nerd are diluted terms these days though, because 10 years ago just playing a videogame was enough to label you as a nerd, these days everyone has a little bit of geek in them I think - it's no bad thing, it's probably pretty normal in todays society to go a bit OTT on the stuff you like (like LOTR), because there's so many crud movies and shows and books out there these days that you have to grasp the good stuff and make the most of it, that's why I love Lost so much, it makes most other TV shows look so bad in comparison.

Mine is just a Yin Yang, and a badly done one at that, I'd get more but there's no decent tattooists locally, I'd want it done by someone with real talent, like that girl from Miami Ink, something incredible and not just the usual run-of-the-mill rubbish. I've designed a couple of tattoo's for people before, might design one for myself eventually.

I'd probably recommend to leave it for 6 weeks then start using the shampoo, but not too much water - It'll itch, but that soon stops. Also, I use Dread Head HQ too.

As for tattoos, hoping to get a huge one on my back now that I'm old enough to get one, but I'll probably leave that until I'm at university, I'm still thinking something that I would like to have permanently and something that isn't common (like those bloody tribal tattos)

I agree with Fallout. Anyone who is obssessed and narrow minded is pretty nerdy.

I know a kid who's into drift racing. He once spent a WHOLE day talking about it to me even though I clearly have NO interest in it: he's obviously obssessed with it. That's just as 'sad' as being obsessed with World of Warcraft or Star Trek in my opinion.

And for the record I would drop my pride and say I am a big geek / nerd, yes.

(I can't resist pointing out however that I can drive, I go out, I've had a few girlfriends (got one now), I work, I play music etc..)

I dunno... I think there's different types of nerds. I fall asleep whenever Star Trek is on, I don't believe in the Matrix, I absolutely hate Lord of the Rings, and I'm not too big on Star Wars, either (I enjoyed them, but I'm far from fanatical and I have a hard time remembering characters). Unlike most, I was impervious to the addictive powers of World of Warcraft, finding it rather boring and monotonous after a pretty short period of time. I never played with Magic cards, RPG games bore me to tears, and I've never played Dungeons and Dragons. I'm somewhat athletic, playing "soccer" week after week, and the longest I've ever been single has thus far been a hearty six-month run right after high school, but not because I couldn't find a date, I just didn't want to be with anyone (lost a girlfriend in a car accident, so dating was the furthest thing from my mind).

But then, I dunno. I'm designing a watercraft based on the Innospace Dolphin. I made a "go plane" at one point that everyone was too afraid to fly. I spend every waking moment designing, coding, playing, and thinking about games. I play Battlefield 1942 with frightening sincerity, flying my Corsairs and Mustangs with an uber-expensive Saitek X52 Flight Control System, which I love like some might love their children (if I had kids, I think they'd have to compete with the X52, and what an uphill battle they'd face!). I love Ferraris, not because they're cool to pick up chicks in, but because I'm obsessed with how they're designed and built and love that genuine Ferrari engine sound (some day maybe I'll get to own one, hehe). In fact, if I see some leggy blonde washing a Ferrari in a skimpy outfit, I feel obliged to rescue it from her evil clutches. And I love history, especially ancient Mediterranean and WWII history. So I dunno, I think I'm a nerd, but a different kind of nerd. I think there's nerd classifications, I'm just not sure what those are, hehe.

I'm definitevly a geek, but I don't know if I'm a nerd, though I'm a person that gets obssessed with things on a regular schedule.
It might be my OCD, lol.
Like, I would never get a tatoo. If can't even trust that the veggies in my house are clean, no way those needles are clean.

Band of Brothers is excellent, i watch it religiously...

I'm not going to say,
"I can drive, i go out every weekend and i have a girlfriend so that doesn't make me a nerd"
because none of the above really matter, i do in fact drive, go out regularly (when money permits of course) and i do have a girlfriend, but i will ramble on about 3d to my non 3d literate friends if one of them mentions something 3d related, i end up chatting to many of my students (who seem the only ones actually interested) about the 3d business, how things are done in the movies and the industry in general because i enjoy talking about it, i won't take it so far as to ramble on forever but i'm sure i annoy some of my friends sometimes

Down the local, me and a mate have been banned from saying the word "Macintosh" or anything related to that because we once had a 3 hour long discussion on how damn friggin cool they are... shame.

Seppuku,

Nah, I couldn't leave it that long... I hate dirty hair.
It's bad enough when I wash it one day, then go out the night after and have it stinking of smoke, it's just wrong.

I know that after a week it starts to look after itself and what-not, but I'd still prefer to wash it

Here's something interesting for you, on a local radio segment the other day they had callers ring up with confessions of being a 'nerd'. A huge number of 'regular' people called up confessing that they're secretly a nerd and quite proud of it, and by 'regular', I mean they had people such as truckies, tradies and even professional athletes ringing up and confessing. On the other hand, only one 'stereotypical nerd' rang up admitting it.

I think people are defining nerds as people with no friends and few social skills that are good with computers, but really, I think we've moved away from that stereotype. Now so many people are into computers, that I think we've created a new class, or at least redefined one. I consider someone a nerd who a) is good at using and is into computers, b) are intelligent, and c) get good grades and care about their education. None bad in my opinion, but many have come to view it that way. I guess others definition of nerds are different, but those are the terms I usually judge it by . Social status doesn't really matter to me, if you're popular and are into computers and are smart, I'd consider you a nerd.

Gil,
What you described is more of a Geek than a nerd.
A Nerd is the person without the social skills who just rambles on about a topic without ever considering that the other person is interested or not.

Quote: "Speaking of WWII history, have you ever seen Band of Brothers?"

hehe you missed all of my Band of Brothers quotes over in the Favorite Quotes Thread, I had some great ones in there . BoB is flat-out amazing. I wish HBO would produce more mini-series' about WWII, maybe a mini-series about the Invasion of the Phillipines, I could see a ten-episode run about that being totally awesome.

My dream (well, one of them) is to make a WWII MMOFPS. Not like WWII Online... I want more up-to-date graphics and a design with more space for dramatic effect. I have a whole game like that planned out from top to bottom, every aspect of the design finalized and picture-perfect. And Dink said in a different thread he'd love to work on it with me. So now we just need a few million dollars and about 70 people . Well, 68 if you count myself and Dink, lol. But someday... someday it'll be the greatest WWII game ever made .

If I have to be honest, the Id say yes, I am a nerd. Now, I still have friends, but I don't go out much, and find anything pertaining to Computers or the Universe's Origins(No specific theory's mentioned here ) highly interesting, unlike all the teens my age I know.

I also like Star Trek: The Next Generation, but thats it. Ive never been to a convention, never been one of those nerds who can speak Klingon or something, etc. As for friends, I'm one of those cases where I have "popular" friends but am not popular myself. To bad

I get called a nerd all the time, but thats when I'm talking about computers with my friends and the others around just don't understand. I don't think I look like a nerd, for starters I have a tan and in somewhat decent shape. I've got sports trophies and medals, but I don't look like a jock. I'm a decent skater, but I doubt I look like one. But I read techy articles and think science is neat. But I've dated probably a million girls. For the nerds left wondering, girls aren't all they're cracked up to be.(and they're expensive) I'm on the PC less than I used to be, I blame work. But at one time 10 hours a day wasn't unusual.

Here's how I define 'nerd' among other similar terms:

Nerd - the true knowledgible ones
Geek - Somewhat knowledgible, but real big into the latest gadgets and must have every cubicle toy created.
Dork - the DnD kid who likes to play dress-up, doesn't really know anything (the starwars kid). Also referred to as Trekkies or mamma's boy.
