I was watching Coast, the BBC programme just before and it inspired me. I want to travel along part of the south coast of Britain, but I lack some thing. I don't have friends some one needs for this kind of thing (the ones I have are too busy or just not bothered, gits).

I need some advice on what I should do for traveling alone. What should I do and not do etc.

Sensible advice would be good, if you can manage that

Ahem! I DO believe he said sensible advice Child...

Either...find some new friends...Or some of them following.

Be prepared, make sure you're completely prepared before you go. Keep your phone with you at all times and keep it charged. Keep some money away for back up - so if something goes wrong, you can get yourself out of it. Keep with the crowds, avoid going out at night (Depending where you're going, you won't want to feel alone, Margate is along the south coast...so I probably wouldn't go there ) Don't get too drunk, you will want to know where you are. Make sure you know where you're going before going anywhere, if lost always stop to ask for directions (But avoid shifty eyed people, especially those who go by the name of Adam Biles or their alias, Oolite) Make sure everything is book properly, for your hotel or Bed and Breakfast - if there's a problem at the last minute with that (Like some crazy maniac murdered several people in your room and now it's a crime scene) that you have a backup plan (Places that are open locally and have vacancies) heck for everything a contigency plan is a good idea, so you have something to fall back on if all doesn't go to plan. But nothing of remembering your passport or NHS card of course, I know people say Liverpool is in a completely different country, but it's not really.

If i was to try and give advice, i\'d just say, take a backup credit card or something, just in case of money troubles, but to make sure you have none of these, plan a budget on how much you want to spend a day/week and stick to it.
Include everything in the budget, food, drinks, cigarettes, alcohol(obviously essential) and accomodation.

I would recommend dragging someone with you, as its a lot safer (not that the south coast is known for being a very dangerous place) but even if something completely stupid happens like you slip and break your leg (you\'d have to be really unlucky but...). If your alone it could prove to be a rather crappy situation.

Phone home regularly to let your folks or someone know where you are. It might be worth getting a phone with gps or something so you can give exact coordinates in an emergency.

also...

I dont see it being much fun travelling alone. Nobody to share experiences with, nobody to talk to.

Those are some pretty harsh "friends".

Agreed, my buddies come with me all the time on walks. Anyway, advice right.

Be wary of your surroundings, are you going into a completely rural area or are you going to be able to see people? If its the latter, just watch out for crazy axe murderer's, if in rural do you have a tent, flashlight, first aid, cell phone to call for help? Make sure you have some backup money incase you need it, and have an extra battery pack or other form of communication to the world.

I'm sure there is more I could say, um..pack a knife and matches, a lighter, some flint and some easy to make food. GO RAMEN! I'm used to being out for a couple nights by myself, its to stay sharp, how long are you going out? I wish you the best of luck and if i missed anything i apologize.

Jump from Durdle Door, it is one of the funnest things to do in Dorset. Then go and get trashed in Bournemouth and wake up on the beach naked.

----------

Also go to Studland its probably the nicest beach in England, it's where they filmed the video for Yellow if you don't know...

Just be careful. Don't trust anyone, lots of people can smell naivety and will try and cash in on it. If you drink, don't drink so much that you can't manage yourself, and don't drink in seedy establishments.

Your best bet would be to travel with a friend. Having a partner greatly increases your odds of success.

I am some one who likes being alone, I dont need people around me to stay sane, its probably why I dont have decent friends willing to do things, too much time alone with my computer.

Thanks for the advice, which ill take. I dont drink, so thats one thing that wont mess thing up.

Ive attached an image of where I would like to walk from and to, because along the way, there is a bay shaped like a shell, which needs photographing

That's basically only Dorset (good choice), but it's not far. About 100km I'd say. Maybe I'm missing something...?

You could cycle it in a day.

I thought you were talking about going from Dover to Land's End. You should head down to Cornwall they have palm trees down there. We get a few in Bournemouth but not many.

Money is the most important thing, don't run out, always have enough to get back home via train or bus on you just in case. The south coast is nice though, there's little chance that you'd run into trouble, personally I'd be most concerned about breaking an ankle or something.

Edit:
Hehe, palm trees in Cornwall?, you mean those little shivering lumps of disappointment that they like to put in their front gardens . We found this great little beach about 20-30 miles west of Torquay, they hire out jetski's and paddle boards, damn good fun to spend a day there, the beach is perfect, no idea what the place was called though.

It would only cost about £15 to get to Bournemouth from Liverpool (£30 there and back) on a National Express Funfare. You have to go through London which is good or bad depending on whether you've visited London before, and it will take HOURS, but it is the cheapest way to do it.

Once you are there you can either camp (cheap) or stay in B&Bs (nice).

lol, you're worried about travelling alone, in the UK??? you're gonna have problems when you try going abroad mate

but anyway, my real advice is, if you plan on walking the route, travel light. all you need is a camera, some snacks to keep you going, and your bank card and mobile in case of an emergency. you shouldn't need a terrible amount of cash.

I've just found that on google earth, that's Swanage to the right, right? it's like a 25 mile walk, would take most of a day, but you could probably bike it in 2 hours at a leisurely pace

I want to basically stop off at places and look around. Ive never done some thing like this before, so the distance shouldn't be too great for my first time.

I am fine with myself going alone, its my parents who worry and stop me doing things.

About money, I have a enough for this trip, lets say over £500, which I wont use all of it.

I was thinking of taking a week to do this, so I have plenty of time to see things.

Dude. You could walk the entire south coast with a luminous jacket saying "Stab me to death, and I won't prosecute" on and nothing would happen. The south coast is about as safe as a Volvo in a safe. So I would say enjoy, although I also find it hard to see how this sort of thing would be fun alone.

I guess that I'm so used to being in America, where a lonely trip can cause you to wind up swindled or stabbed or both, maybe even by the same person (depending on how far you get in your trip). Perhaps you'll be depicted in the next Chainsaw Massacre movie.

Yeah, similar to chavs, gypos, tinkers, and joskins.

Legoland where Fallout lives is pretty much the same except they all wear top hats and bicycle moustaches. Basically round the corner from Windsor and Ascot. I used to live there so it must be true. Guv...

i did the whole student wander thing when i were younger (about 7years ago now.. damn that makes me feel old), travelled with a friend across asia. didn't really have a gameplan of where to where, we just wanted to take 3months between semesters and see what we could see.

did it with my friend Kay, probably helped cause she had always been more level headed about things.. i've always had the thing of act first, worry about consequences later. (she kept me out of some serious trouble heh)

money was never a big issue doing it, because most of the time you'll find there's hostels which are quite cheap; and bars don't mind hiring staff for a day or so for cash-in-hand. don't know if it's the same in this contry so much, but given the amount of european backpackers doing that sort of thing; can only assume it's not that different.

something i'd suggest is a pop-tent, and budget a bit of cash for food. apart from that you should be able to get most of what you want on the way. realistically the distance you're going won't take too long, i mean i've done that distance before no my own just to see how long it'd take. (i'm too curious about things lol)

doing it on the south coast is probably best, as it's a much friendlier area of the country. i'd personally say if you want to do something, go for it.. but i'm sure there's probably some sorta voice of reason that people are adding that should be taken into consideration.

Dorset is actually pretty pikey free. Especially that strectch of coast. You might get a few in Poole with is just off the right of the map, but that bit there is proper countryside.

I can understand how you would prefer going it alone. It'd really give you the chance to get away from it all and just have some time to yourself.

Having said that, it could get pretty boring if it decides to start dumping rain like there's no tomorrow and you have to spend all day stuck in a tent.

You can't go wrong with a Gameboy + Tetris for that very reason.

Here are some tips.

Take a bucket, shower lining cloth, a spade (or small backpack sized shovel). Wear only pants and long sleeved shirts. Bring rope, night vision goggles, a 9 mm pistol, black clothing mainly, a flak jacket, some MREs, a canteen, radios (communicating kind), a combat survival knife, some camo face paint. And actually, make sure all clothes you bring are camoflauge, so you can become undetected from enemy tourists.. Y'know, if you went on some sort of operation while walking around, you'd need all the above gear. Plus whatever everbody else mentioned. Oh yeah, and combat boots, wear those at all times. I mean, get used to wearing them now, so start running so you'll be prepared.

Good luck son. Don't die, and use Krav Maga if needed.

I think you should always at any time carry at least $50 usd in your shoes in case of an emergency. It came in handy for me in Europe, and in the Caribbeans.

:/ you want a gps... to walk that distance? Im pretty sure you'd need a magnifying glass to plot where you've been.

It just seems odd, you're not really leaving... its a day-long walk, if that, depending on how many trains and busses you take.

What am I going to do with $50 in my socks in the UK, I don't live in the USA, I won't be able to buy any thing with it, its much easier to stuff £50 in my socks :p

I talked to my mum and dad about this trip and I don't think they mind me going. So I may be going this summer, July/August, so when I'm back ill post what photo's I have.

Some one said about taking a pop up tent, I think that's a good idea, but I was thinking about pitching it late at night and not knowing I'm in a field with a bull (ill wake up as a pancake). Ill order one of them today

Damn. There goes that link I thought we had .... ok, I'm over it. If I still lived there I would camp out with an axe outside Legoland waiting for the sound of your car (then have a nap and a cuppa before you actually turned up guessing by how loud the thing probably is). Bloody northerners...

Yeah, I was going to say. Some bigger places may take it (touristy areas) but doubt a tiny pub with the only food for miles are going to take it. Unless he means for another purpose! Is US currency better for keeping the heat in, or absorbing water or something? And $50? In an emergency that wouldn't even get you back home on the train

If I were you I could carry on to the end of Dorset. That would cover the whole Jurassic Coast I think. It's worth doing it's the only natural UNESCO World Heritage site in England. Certainly it would get you to Lyme Regis which is pretty much the best place to find fossils in the world. That's where they first found an Icthyasaur skeleton, and thus it always makes me think of Half-life.

Pack a crossbow to be safe.
