does anyone know why the heck explorer would take 99 % CPU?? It only started a few days ago and I know I have a virus (working on removing it now) but I think it started before that... its gotten to the point where I have to start explorer from the taskmanager, start my game, then quickly end the explorer.exe process before my game starts up. Otherwise it runs terribly.

anywone know why this would be and/or ideas to fix it?

Explorer.exe will just reboot itself.
Most common reason for overly ambigious cpu/memory useage is malware.. or explorer has started a task that is intensive in itself.

Def dont want to reformat... WAY too much work. It turns out I managed to get the Trojen.Vundo virus which is one of the hardest Trojens on the internet to remove. I spent a good few hours at it and finally got it off... I'm running a final scan now(in safe mode) and am going to reboot shortly and check the CPU usage

AVG Free (Anit virus/rootkit/spyware) http://free.grisoft.com/doc/28415/lng/us/tpl/v5

Zone Alarm Free (Firewall) http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?dc=56pus&ctry=GB&lang=en&lid=staticcomp_za
Pick the bottom button [i only want basic Zone Alarm Protection] to avoid all that full trial crud.

Firefox (Secure Web Broweser) http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

I use all the above and my computers (touch wood) have been trouble free for years. Highly recommended.

Don't forget that USB flash drives can carry all sorts of nasty virii and worms that anti-virus software sometimes fail to detect.

If you're using XP, download and install Tweak UI. Among other tweaks, you can disable AutoPlay on all external drives.

It's also a good idea to disable Windows Scripting Host since many flash drive worms just love to exploit it.
