Without a doubt in anyone's mind - AOE and CNC have topped the list of the "Best RTS ever made". But now - pitting them head to head - what do you think? Who out of these 2 deserves to be crowned the best RTS of all time?

With the release of the new AOE3 and the upcoming CNC game, the question still stands - who deserves the crown? You decide (with reasons to support your opinion of course).

(The reason I ask is to find which is more popular so I can buy one because, I CAN'T DECIDE!!! )

EDIT: Also, forgot to mention that I already have the GDI disc of the very first Command and Conquer (CNC 95). I am a little concerned about buying CNC and then realising that there's nothing new to be experienced from the first game - so, in your opinions, is there?

Command and Conquer definitely. Why?

The setting appeals to me more, I think AoE had more races, which spoke in their advantage, but C&C just felt better to me. AoE just got boring after a few weeks. Then I'd just get down to 'E=mc2 trooper' and 'Big daddy', while personally I play a lot more of C&C - it's faster (no two hours pre-fight fase), more spectacular (KABOOM, BENG, BLAST, AAAHRG) and in a nicer setting (horses and spears vs overlord tank...).

Not that I feel you can compare them. AoE was more of building/exploration, C&C more of combat/recourse conquering.

Ofcourse, StarCraft owns all.

I enjoyed C&C more than AOE. Red Alert was the golden era for RTS games, and really enjoyed playing that multipler. AOE was good, but C&C just had the edge.

Gotta say, though I don't know how anyone who enjoyed the Red Alert era of RTS games can still get excited about C&C now. Am I the only person who doesn't see any innovation? I feel like I'm playing the same games over and over again with prettier graphics and different units. The mechanics just aren't really changing.

Nope, you're not alone. StarCraft never bores, but besides that, the only fun 'RTS' games I've played were Rome: Total War and the new one, Supreme Commander, I think. Total Annihilation was kinda fun too.

I'm more into TBS now-adays, those tend to be unique. Fire Emblem really caught my heart.

Would i be right in saying AOE has more units than C&C? I think thats why AOE appeals to me more.

Can't really compare the 2 heads up because it depends on what setting I'm feeling at the moment.

for me it goes like this:

Historical:
AOE II (with expansion packs (Conquerer's exp a must as it takes away some micro-mgmt details like having farmers replant fields & just seriously improves the overall game))

Modern:
C&C Red Alert II (in my oppinion the best of the series. I never played Generals)

Futuristic:
StarCraft (with or without expansion packs)

Guess it depends on what you like, but you can't really have the games going head-to-head with each other for best RTS.

It's like saying "Which is better, Bauldar's Gate or Final Fantasy"; sure they're both RPGs in their own way but entirely different animals.

Just like the top-dog MMORPGs are completely different styles of games. AoE is more economical in design, having you build up an empire, where-as C&C the only rules is to kill the otherside preferable as quick as possible.

Compare C&C with Dawn of War by all means, but AoE really is a class of it's own.

Okay - with just CNC - which of the series is the bestest ever AND are they just the same as CNC 95 just better graphics and stuff?

Never played AOE. I have played almsot all of CNC though except generals...and that 3d first person one or whatever it was.

All of them are pretty fun! Except for the new one, no real challenge in it...I think its ment to be more of a multiplayer RTS then a SP rts.

But I think CNC should easily take the cake over AOE...but who knows, i'v never played AOE so it could easily turn in there favor...BET CNC ALL!

I like both games. I have played more AOE than CNC so i guess its unfair for me to vote(only playing CNC at friends and such) but i do have to say i enjoyed AOE 2:age of kings. The reason i liked it is because it was sort of a fast paced "civilization" where you make your own little kingdom and then battle it out. I also enjoyed the campaigns and there is also a history portion or button in the game menu giving the game an educational value if your into that. Also the game would be abit challenging when played on the harder settings especially being rushed. I have a lot of good memories with that game so for me i like AOE 2,sadly enough i don't own AoE 3 as i don't really like the idea of going into the new world. I prefer to battle it out more on medieval settings (after all i come from a long lineage of knights ) so im checking out now the Medieval 2:Total War and considering purchase.

EDIT: Bet AOE All

I've seemed to always preferred Age of Empires, the third one is pretty good in my opinion.

this is silly they're both good in their own respects.
as they're different games, so all this is; is a thread about personal preferences.

I'm a C&C guy, but my brother likes both equally. He's a bit of an RTS fan though.

I was about to say...

Like Raven said, they are completely different games, the biggest thing they have in common is that they are RTS games, AOE requires a lot work than C&C.

I agree with [whoever it was] with Red Alert, definately my favourite C&C game and possibly one of my favourite games of all time.

Still need to get my hands on C&C 3 though...

Age of Empires 2 has always seemed to me to be about the best game in the world... I prefer it over C&C for a few different reasons. AOE is much more complex, with more units, more buildings, better chances to expand your base (always hated 'sandbagging' for second bases in C&C), more resources, and I think the engine is built better. (Espiecially since it was used in Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds )

Of course the two games are difficult to compare since they are so vastly different... different by about a millemium. AOE in my opinion is the number one greatest RTS of all time, C&C would probably be second. It depends on what you feel like playing i guess... If your looking for a quick distraction, fast action, and deaths that look like melting tomatos then I would go with C&C. If your looking more for a "lets build a massive empire and end them all in one fell swoop" I would definatly go with AOE.

in my expericance AOE games last about 3-4 hours (depending on a lot of factors) where C&C almost never last more than 1.

@Underlord: I got ur CSS joke before I read it was from CSS. Made me laugh pretty well :-P

Bet C&C half
Bet AOE all
