It looks really nice! Downloading now I like the Health and Energy bars.

EDIT: That was pretty fun I just wish I had had a little more magic though-- the fireballs were cool and I wanted to make more... But that's not really something that needs to be done.

Very good first game!

First time I see a first post that is this impressive. Very well done!

I stand with Zotoaster, can't wait to see what's coming as next project.

I like Sparky's dll and used it successfully in an early iteration. I found NGC easier to use though (ease-of-use speaks to me). Still, when framerate becomes an issue, I'll keep Sparky's handy.

Thanks for the feedback. Just for fun, I'll reveal a couple extras:
* key 4 = move camera down
* key 5 = move camera up
* game will write basic game data to a "score.txt" file at the completion of the last level
* move mouse to upper-right corner and hit 'h' key will show basic internal data
* move mouse to upper-right corner and hit 'p' key will give you maximum hp, mp, and items (wow! secret cheat!)

No prob. I know you have more elaborate menu/button code out there (which I plan to use in future projects). This simple menu was perfect in this instance.

Thanks. I spent a year reading posts and trying out code snippets and tutorials before I even considered posting anything.

I'd love to see what you come up with in the future, this game was really well made! Loved the old-schoolness of the gameplay.

It's a great start! I love the 2D art The ingame cards/icons are nice and the hint cards are great for new players, a good game design feature.

A few tips:

1. A mouse controlled camera would be nice, throwing fireballs with LMB and jumping with RMB. It is a PC game after all and many are more used to play with the mouse then the keyboard.

2. Intro is better done as a slideshow instead of scrolling, using mouse clicks or key presses to advance. I had no chance reading that text at that speed and it's nice to look at the images for a while.

3. The player character looks a bit stiff, improved animations would add to the game. Also create 8 directions of animations with strafing etc so she always faces in the camera direction.

4. In tighter areas you often get walls blocking the sight, this is a problem with 3rd person cameras. They are not suited for tight levels and you should figure out a way to do it well, like zooming in or hiding walls. Or you could change the level design.

5. Should there really be 2 keys on the first level?

6. The health bar on the enemies looks better if they are centered and propperly above or below the enemies. Perhaps you should consider a game design that does not require them as I think they take away some of the immersion. A nice addition would be if the player could tell when the fire was nearing it's end, like a flickering flame.

7. Consider removing the text that displays how much health/mana is lost. Most real time games do not use them and I think it's one more thing that takes away from the immersion. You could make this visual in the bars by coloring the lost amount differently, before it dissapears.

Oh yeah, I'm always lurking around.

@Digital Awakenings -- Thanks for the great feedback. I agree with all of your tips and I hope to incorporate them in next release, esp. the mouse control. It'll be a while before the next release since I do everything myself -- modeling, animating, and coding. I'm coming into game design as an artist, so coding is the hardest part for me. But it's rewarding (4,000 lines, so far! ).

Looks REALLY good If you followed DA's tips, you could easily sell it!

BTW, it's more frustrating coming into game design as a programmer, because you (for example) decide to make a racing game. You then have to learn how to model a car before you can even start on coding the physics, because you need to know if it looks realistic. Then you need to make a track, and without being able to texture, you end up with screenshots that look like bird poo (mainly white, with bits of black showing through) Who's going to want to model a car and track for that game?

Very good! I pushed the block into a corner and had to quit because i couldn't put it where it needed to go. Some way to either pull boxes or to reset the room would be good.

I'm glad you liked my ideas

Starting as an artist is quite rare, and as Diggsey says have many advantages. Most people excell in either field, not both, and forums for programming languages usually attract programmers.

I'm working on a software currently called Simple Game Toolkit for those who want to make games without programming. Although a lot is done I'm still working on and refining the basics, and it's 2D only for now. Around 9000 lines at the moment.
