Not sure if many of you guys read Kotaku much but they quite often post papercraft models of gaming characters.

Anyway I had some free time so I finally decided to make a couple of them.

The Snake one is made out of regular printer paper, it's a little bit fiddling but can be done in an evening.

The Windwaker Link I printed on thin card. It's actually not that hard to make, considering how *amazingly* accurate it is... it takes most of a day to make.

The only glue I could find in the house was wood glue, but it seems to just be regular PVA. I found the best thing to do was spread it pretty thin then wait for it to dry a bit so it's really sticky then push the pieces together.

Here's the results of my photo shoot!

Anyway if anyone wants to try their hands I'll post up the cut out pieces...

This is what I'm going to attempt in a few days:

and

They look pretty tricky!

Ha, that's cool. The Sonic one actually looks like a low poly 3d model

I suppose you could always make a model then "unfold" it so you can see where you need to make creases and bends if you want to design your own character or shape.

I think that is how they made the OoT Link because it looks *exactly* like the N64 model, which was about the right polycount for a papercraft model.

There's Star Wars galore, like I'm sure these guys are from Lego Star Wars...

My brother tried a StormTrooper but didn't get too far, I plan to do that walker thingy once I get some decent card to do it with.

Those guys are probably 6" tall when you print onto A4, and damn fiddly at that size so you have been warned.

The link is about 6", the Snake is about 3".

Snake was on A4, and Link was on loads of separate pieces of card, so might have come out slightly bigger than A4...

Attached are the plans.

I wish I had some card here, not a huge fan of Zelda, but that model looks really cool - have a colour laser printer at work that'd do a handsome job of them.

I love the Sonic one!

What I'm gonna do, since it's obviously been scanned in, is trace the outline and folds with vectors, and post up the psd file (saved from the GIMP, so I might package it with the xcf file just in case) so people can scale it as they see fit, and colour it to their desire.

Personally, I think I'll make a mini version, and a huge version when I go home during the Uni holidays (2 weeks!)

Changed my mind, I'm going to export them in Scalable Vector Graphics format (.svg), since it's such a tiny file format which can easily be opened in most graphics applications (GIMP, Photoschop, Inkscape, etc).

So, here's the first one done:

Here's a low res cutout generated from the svg file posted above...

Both with and without cut/fold lines

I guess this is just like 3D Modelling, but you have a little more control of what you can do

The OoT Link looks cool, low poly looking but still good
