Like many forum users know, I get angry easily and quick.

A year ago, I got into a shouting match with one of the most arrogant A-hole's I've ever met.

I was competing at a science fair, the kid was probably a year younger than me. First, there are guys in their 50's competing in this fair, with very professional skills. Secondly, how does this kid get in? This is what happened.

A crowd of people are "oowing" and "aahing" over something displayed on this kid's TV. I walk up to see a PS2 hooked up and him displaying a video game he "made".

I noticed the "RPG Maker" case sitting behind the PS2 console.

The kid said:
Quote: "Yes, I made this game myself."

ME: How'd you program all this then format it to a PS2?

KID: I used a special type of software. I won't go into detail, you might not understand it.

Me: (laugh)

He then returned to the crowd lying his pants off about how he scripted and programmed everything they saw.

ME: That looks like RPG Maker.

KID: I modelled the objects after some of the objects in the game.

ME: No, that's RPG Maker. It's a real amateur software.

KID: Ha! Well, what do you use?

ME: C++, DarkBasic, and FPSC or FPS Creator.

KID: (laugh)

1. This kid is using a PS2 to create games.
2. He uses RPG Maker, a software I've disliked for a long time.
3. He's lying to a crowd of people.
4. He's an A-hole about it!

If he comes back this year, I will surefully say something.

What do you think? Post your thoughts.

I've been programming for 6 years. How could this kid possibly think he's a pro?

Well imagine him a few years time, I like to think things come back to people - he may feel top of the world now, but he'll see the downsides of lying and presenting himself higher than he really is. I wouldn't let it get to you - you know he's not as good as he makes out to be and you're a better programmer and what you're getting from being honest is far greater than he'll get from being a lying little git - "oohs" and "ahhs" are cheap moments.

In an industry where everybody has invented a better wheel, it's very place common scenario. Call what you want Attitude, Ego, Delusions of grandeur such behavior isn't going to vanish any time soon. It's part of the fun of programming.

DESTROY THE BASTARD!!

Seppuku Arts I agree with you. And C++ nerd - you are a coder. Don't let that punks like that get to you - he'll get what's coming.

Who knows? He might try starting his own "games programming company" but lose all the money before he does. His boyfriend leaves him and he ends up on the street begging for a buck. *MU-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!*

I know it all well. I remember I got really far into making an old game of mine called X-Ball. I had perfect collision, and it was completelly moddable (almost).

I was talking to my friend about it and about the power of DBPro, he then comes back a few days later and starts telling me all his plans about an awesome racing game he was going to make. I just laughed nicely about it at first, but what triggered my angry reaction was the words: "It's gonna kick the ass of any game youve made". He didnt say it in an insulting manner, he just thought he could. I started explaining about the difficulties about game making and how taking things too fast would be bad, but he just got his friends to back him up about how it was gonna be better than mine...

I just left.

You should have asked what the "special software" was called He would have hesitated and then said something stupid like "ummmm... that's confidential".

It annoys me that he laughed when you said you used C++, after all that (as well as DBP and FPSC) completely pwn's Rpg maker.

Maybe the people knew he didn't really program or model for the game, but they just went along with it because he was a kid.

Why didnt you grab the rpg maker box and tape it to the kids head and stick a sign to his back saying 'Loser'

This is not that bad of an 'offence', you shouldn't really let things get to you this much, its just one stupid kid, he's not going to make any money from it, not really going to get any personal gain from it and from what i can tell its not really affecting you apart from you getting unnessecarily worked up over it, lifes too short to be getting worked up about this kind of crap.

lol, love that Oolite, but yes life's full of problems and nutters, best leave them be to craziness.

Like Kevin said, they're all around, we've had the odd one or two around here and you'll probably meet several in your life time..also 'punch him in the face' isn't always good when the guy is twice the size of you. (My situation 3-4 years ago; although I punched him in stomach, but hey, he swung for me first!) They're all pretty much inadequate, amuse yourself, pity them just don't do one thing, and that's be worked up by them.

Don't get me wrong, but this statement on your part doesn't sound that mature either.

Granted, the kid probably deserves a clip 'round the ear but make sure that you don't lose your upper hand, by sinking down to his level of petty "did not, did too" attitude.

He's a kid. Let him get his glory. It's good for children, and he knows it's not that great anyway. He just wants some attention. Don't get mad at him for that. It's the same reason you go there, eh?

Yeah, there rally isn't much I could do.

The thing that annoyed me the most was just the fact that people believed that this kid programmed everything himself.

I should have held up the RPG Maker box, that would have really ticked him off. But, from the technological level of the crowd, I might have made myself look like an ass.

Hopefully this "wanna-be" game maker will realize he's not a "real" game maker, as he basically just played a video game.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Anyone else? Feel free to post.

well if the kid laughs at just the name of real game making tools/languages then he will never be a serious game maker .. maybe pong by the time he's 80 and thats if he's lucky so don't sweat it... your a real programmer and 10000x better and if he does come back well don't bother with him just go check out something else that's worth your time.

Some kid in my school was bragging about his computer skills, and I asked him, "What can you do?". He said, "I'm really good at Microsoft". I just laughed.

Some other kid has this dream about being an excellent game designer, and in my opinion, he is one of the stupidest people I know. I showed him one of my games, and he said that he could make it easily. I told him, "By all means, let's see you make that. No, go on". lol

I remember when I first wanted to get in to game design, I wanted to make a game with RPG Maker. Now look where I am.

Something similar happened to me when I was in Grade 8, showing off my game to everyone I made in QBasic. This older kid in Grade 12 sat down with me and introduced me to C++ and gave me a bit of a crash course. Anyways, I totally respected him for that and decided to learn that language. I realized that QBasic was "kiddie" compared to what tools he was using.

Anyways, if you're just cool about it and offer to show him a better language, maybe things would turn out better.

You know that RPG Maker, is for PS1, and it has a scripting language. And RPG Maker 2,3 are for the PS2, and they have a tad bit more advanced scripting "language" as well right? Oh well, you shoulda CTRL+ALT+Deleted the Kid.

Oh well, life goes on as they say.

Change the things in life you have control over, rather than get irritated over the things you can't.

"I used C++ / DB Pro to make my game. Other options included RPG Maker for the PS2, and although it's great for young people to experiment with the very basics of programming, you soon realise it's limitations and lack of features."

See - you can appraise a situation and bring somebody else down without looking like a frustrated, hyped-up opponent.

@Batvink
Clever...

There's somebody in my year who thinks he's a hacker! He has been banned from the school computers because he searched 'how to hack school computers' in google, in an IT lesson! He downloaded a program that lets him send lots of nudges over MSN, and now goes on about how he 'scripted MSN'. He doesn't know the difference between a programming language and a script (he just calls everything a script). To test him, to see if there was even the slightest truth, I made a program to spam MSN, and asked him to make one as well. I uploaded mine to show him, and then he reuploaded my program, and told me that he had made one very similar!!! In the help->about, it still said: 'Made by Diggsey'. I mean anyone with a hex-editor could at least have changed that bit!
I asked him what programming language he could use, and he said: 'I can program HTML and I can also make scripts'
Does the word IDIOT spring to mind?

Shakespeare could make scripts and computers weren't invented then, but I seriously doubt Macbeth is a prodecudure into hacking Nasa's computers. So what kind of scripts can he make. FPSC ones? LUA? Darkscript? TorqueScript? Scripts for a news documentary? What? There's no real point wasting your time with them really; if you must let him know that you know he's a fake and be on your way then perhaps they'll realise that they can't fool you, I mean if you go on your way they can't exactly try to convince you otherwise. As long as you know and they know - whatever they say or you say won't make an ounce of difference.

Ha! That made me laugh for a long time.

@Diggsey

I like seeing kids who think they can hack, but can't. I hate it when people use software to hack and call themselves a "hacker" the real hacker is the person who made the software.

I hacked before, but nothing advanced. Just used BIOS to reset the network on a few PCs and then tried to see if I could trick myself into not being able to fix it. I never left it broken.

@BatVink, Seppuku
Good advice. I shouldn't worry about someone who I KNOW thinks they know everything. Of course, that crowd thing is hard to get over, considering everyone now thinks he's so great with computers. Only you guys here on the forums, me, and two other people know about this kid being a fake. Hopefully I be able to meet with him again, and teach him a thing or two about his "skills". Ha!

Anyone else have any more stories?

Probably, but like I said, I might look like an a** for doing it. (Not sure if it's against AUP). I'm sure someone would've sided with me, but the way things were going it's hard to tell. People already were starting to look at me like I was, so I'm not sure.

All you need is unrivalled proof. I'm sure bringing the rpg maker case to light would probably have done it. That coupled with the blundering conversation he made with you; one bluff after another.

I personally don't think that this should be left alone. Lying to a small group of mates about some trivial something-or-other is one thing, but lying to a crowd of many, and then shamelessly denying this when, if no one else knows, then at least he does, is just stupid.
It'll become a trend where he gets away with one thing after another, learning nothing, and becoming louder and more perverse, until one time, when someone points him out, and then it's game over. Except then it'll be a huge public humiliation instead of being shown up at a small time fair followed up with a slap on the wrist.

...That might be a touch out of proportion, but you get where I'm going. It's not a good mindset to have.

They made RPG Maker for the PS2 PC and I'm not sure what else. ONE THING'S FOR SURE, RPG MAKER SUCKS!. You really can't get more amateur than RPG Maker.

@Eldest Dragon

He was about 16ish. I want to say 16, though he could have been younger or older. He was a real jackass.

@Monocoder

You're right in a way. I would like to confront him again, in front of many many people about his "skills". I think I've seen him somewhere before as well.

People probably think he's good with game making. HA! I thing all of us here on the forums should have a talk with him.

I agree with indi, i don't care and you shouldn't either to be honest. He didn't really affect you at all.

I've used RPGMaker and i quite liked it for messing about with, you can do some decent things with it, sure its not the most advanced thing ever but i have used it in the past to see how my story would play out or quickly design a map for future reference, i don't really think you should be slating RPGMaker just because you use a programming language thats deemed more advanced than that it, i bet the makers of that have put more effort into it than you have in your projects...

RPG Maker is a fun tool, what Adam just said reminds me of what someone posted a little while back, about C++ fans at GameDev slating DBP users, because it's not a 'real programming language'. Though the kid is claiming that he did all the work, but the tool is pretty good - the PC version is pretty customisable and I've seen good results, like I've seen good results in DBP.

Hey, I use C++ and I also use DarkBASICPro. People on big C++ forums used to say stuff to me, until I showed them how great DBP is, and converted them to DBP users.

@Seppuku, Oolite, indi

The only reason I care is because he was my opponent in the technological competition, and people thought he was so great, when their were guys in their 50's who made great machines and din't even get noticed because of this little punk.
