And I've got final decisions. I've pretty much got my sights on an entry level pc. It has a pentium D 935 @ 3.2 GHz. Now,I know thats not a very good cpu,but I'm going to save up for a c2d e6600. Thats why this is entry Here is the link to the pc I'll be getting:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3142609&CatId=1886

And heres the beauty in the machine(going to put it in):

I may consider adding in an extra GB of RAM. I don't really think its totally necessary at the moment. I also gotta find a way to get vista at a cheap price.

2 GB of RAM is plenty. I've been using 512 MB for a long time, and only ran into a few problems. Don't you think adding another GB of RAM is a little excessive?

I've seen games out there that recommend 3 GB of RAM, but when has ANYTHING ever lagged above 1.5 GB of RAM? I know people who use 128 MB of RAM.

I myself can't wait to upgrade to 1 GB of RAM, even though some people think 2 GB is what to aim for. I truly think the best amount to aim for is 2.5 GB of RAM, not too excessive, yet not too low.

As far as the processor goes, I think you should get the newer P4's or get an Intel X.

the newer p4s? I'd rather have a dual core than a single core if thats what you mean Right now,I'm just getting the pentium D unless I find another computer that has a better processor. The computer I'm getting comes with a decent psu, which,I've seen alot that have like,300W vs the 585W in the one I'm getting. The 8800gts 320mb oc version will gulp that power quickly...

Ok,well, heres the plan. I'm getting the 3.2GHz pentium D for now, then upgrading to an e6600 by december at the latest. Now one question about the pentium D,I heard it heats up alot,is there any truth in this?

I'm not sure. The worst I've heard though is the Core 2 Duo, everyone says it overclocks itself too easily. It shouldn't be too bad. You could always save up and get an Intel Pentium Extreme.

The Pentium D is supposed to bed the midline, right?

For some reason though, everyone keeps bad mouthing the Core 2's. After what I heard about them, I'm not sure if I'd get one. Pentium D sounds good to start with, but I'd get a new one after a few months.

Tell me how it goes.

If you plan to upgrade cpu's in the future, be sure to get the right socket, or you'll virtually kill any chance of changing out your Pentium D for something else.

pentium Ds and core 2 duo's(+core 2 extremes and core 2 quads) are socket LGA 775,so I should be able to. But I think I'm just gonna get an e6320 and oc it to 2.5GHz. It'll be 300$ more(kinda odd...),but oh well. Or I can just buy one and replace it right away with an e6420 or something. I gotta figure out what I'm gonna be doing within the week...haha. I'm also getting a pci cooling card for my 8800gts superclocked, that way it'll hopefully not over heat.

Edit - Ok,I know what I'm doing. I'm buying that same computer, but I'm getting an e6320 with it. That way,I save a little more than buying the computer with the e6320 already in it. Or if I can find something better on newegg I'll do that, but I doubt I will.

Edit 2 - Ok,now I'm getting an e6420,haha. I think my mind is fully set now.

Get as much ram as you can after you get a good cpu, Id say 8 gigs is what to aim for, but you might call that crazy.

I like my sig.

I'm only assuming you mean 8 gigs, and yes,I would be willing to call that crazy :p. I would need to have 4x2GB sticks, and I'm not sure if they make 2GB sticks...or do they? Right now I'm just worried that a logisys x-blade case isn't big enough for an 8800gts.

I've seen 4GB sticks, but they cost a good $250. Not to mention they fry your modules over.

Ideal RAM would be 2 GB. 8 GB will not only have adverse effects on your system, but will really act like 4.

Aren't the CPUs you're mentioning 32bit? In which case you would only have a theoretical RAM limit of 4gb, not counting the address space used for the other devices in the PC. 2gb should be plenty... 3gb tops!

I just ordered a E6600 Core 2 Duo, 320gb HDD, 2gb Ram, Lightscribe DVDRW, and a mouse pad with a picture of a monkey on it. £260 from eBuyer, pretty good prices I think, the E6600 was £140, the cheapest I've seen it anywhere.

That's the most I've ever spent on PC bits in one go, pressing the checkout button was like passing a kidney stone.

well,I don't know too much about Euros, but that doesn't seem all that bad. I'm thinking of getting a barebones kit now, because I found an amazing one:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3032655&CatId=333

I was going to probably put in a bfg tech 8600GTS OC,an Ageia PhysX Accelerator,a 160GB western digital caviar se harddrive, and a liteon 20x dvd drive. That costs around 1,600$. But since I'm paying for it in monthly payments,I can manage it
