You need to tell us how big your case is, is it a mid tower? full tower? mini atx?

Be a little more specific as to the type of crash and or any error messages you get.

My best guess is that cosmic rays are randomly skewing the bits in your RAM... surely you didn't expect too much, with the sparse info provided in your post? :/

well full tower
ATI radeon 9800 pro
1Gb ram
windows XP

Frequent+ random crashes.

i think its the card. its way hotter than anything else in the machine.

Edit: is it possible that a sticker on the back of a graphic card can cause problems?

If it is blocking a vent, yes. If it covering a heatsink, probably. Otherwise, not really.

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

Random crashes are often a sign of a duff motherboard, which is a pain to change, so I'd try swapping out everything else 1st.

Make sure the BIOS is runnung in recommended settings. If it's overclocked then.... doh! wada ya expecta

My other tips for reducing heat...

tie all cables together with cable ties to let the air flow.
clean out an dust from heat sinks (usually means taking the fan off) This is the no1 cause of overheating and fan noise.
Air goes out the back so make sure air can come in the front. If you not got one fit a front fan, but make sure it's blowing in!
If you get the choice of CPU go for Pentium M or Core 2 Duo they run nice and cool.

I'd expect a 9800 pro to run hot as its top of its range. Check it's fans are spinning though.

I have put plastic pegs between graphics cards and their neighbour card before now to allow better air flow. If you have spare PCI slots and there is a card next to it move it further away.

AGP is heat sinks are upside down -.- so another mod i've done in the past it taken the extra rear fan off the back of the case and mounted infront of GPU slot to move air about more from there as heat rises and can't escape.

make sure your ram types are compatible, remember you can only run 2 diff. sticks of ram if they can run at the exact same speeds...IE no single channel with dual channel....

[edit]

My GFX card is as well the hottest thing in my case, but as long as it does not reach like 60-100C then i think your safe my gfx card runs on full load at 56c after turning the PCI clock speed in my bios from 100mhz to 105mhz gives me a increase of 60 frames too...a 7950gt 512mb i have...

What's the point in saying the increase in framerate if you aren't going to say what it has to draw? Whether or not 60 is a big increase depends on the framerate you were getting before. For instance, an increase from 1000fps to 1060 fps isn't so great.

You're trying to ask him if he'll keep your gfx card secure by putting it in his safe? Sorry, I just had to...

yes on the CS:S video stress test before doing that (I as well Oc'ed my cpu and ram, which helped too) i had 95 frames so 60 is a fairly big jump...

Don't be a d-bag because i did not put a comma or period where it was needed.

Thx for all replies. I think it was a loose and weak back power cord, there was a fizzing noise, sorted by a change of main power cord. Its behaved fine.

Actually it was because you used "your" in place of "you're" and as a consequence of it being the last word on that line I assumed you actually were about to specify something that belongs to who you were talking to. It confused me and subsequently ruined my life forever.
