Well, the title is pretty much my question. I could swear I saw that they were selling something like this but I can't find it on the main site anymore. Was it maybe some 3rd party thing that never got finished?

Wasn't that Omega Basic? I think that was a Digital Zenith thing.

Here is the game creators' page - they've stopped selling it:

Digital Zenith seems blank, but I could be wrong about them making it.

I was trying to find Omega Basic as well, to port EE over to mobiles. Would have been awesome to see someone exploring the Port of Hymns on a cell phone on the subway .

Well, seems Omega Basic is no longer being sold anyhow. At least not by TGC. However you use Java to make cell phone games if I'm not mistaken. I'm gonna look into it. I think it might be fun to make some little 2d games on cell phones.

I'm guessing a Java based Basic for all platforms not just phones. Just a hunch. Being able to make game for Linux would be cool

Cell phone games, frankly, suck. They drain the battery like a hole in the casing, have poor graphics limited to about 10, maybe 15 frames per second, a bad sound system, many phones have restrictions on Java and anyway, what on Earth do you want to play a game on a keypad like that for?

As soon as I wanted to buy it, they stop selling it. I have always wanted to create mobile games.

give it abit of time I am working on a mobile phone game creator you will be able to create games like 'DOOM RPG' using my own raycasting engine for MIDP 1 and MIDP 2 phones, Bluetooth functionality will also be available.

I just hope no one brings out a decent one before I do LOL

...Umm, I quite enjoy playing games on my cell phone. The games are cheap and very fun as well. I'm personally not a huge hand-held gamer but I do like the occasional game of Tetris or Collapse on my phone. Besides, is it any of your business if I want to make or play a cell phone game?

I know that some games work a little, like Tetris, but every preloaded game and one I bought has sucked no end for the reasons stated. Have you ever tried playing the original Sonic at 10 fps whilst getting cramps because the buttons aren't designed to be held down? The only phone I've ever enjoyed games on was a 3410, simply because it was designed to do it. It could (shock horror) play some games at nearly full speed!

I messed about with java for a bit, nice language, shame making games for phone sucks, i was happy with the challenge of making everything for the phone, but it just got too annoying in the end, with no real room to mess about or innovate with the games i was creating.

I think some cell phone games can be silly, but I love some of them. That dang skydiving game that came on the Razor, ugh, the hours of my life that stole away, lol. EE would be *perfect* for mobiles, I think anyway. It's light on system requirements (probably moreso after the upcoming Playbasic port), it isn't media-intensive, and people are always trying to read but getting interupted by their cells, so hey, sounds like the perfect audience for me, hehe.

Flash Professional can export to a pda or smart phone application. Of course, its flash, but still, it also allows for applications/games to be made.

I think that the iPhone will help promote cell phone gaming. I'm not up on all the specs, but the videos and presentations I have seen would make me believe it could handle some nice games. Just not sure how the controls would work with the touch screen, and what the DEVsdk will be like. Does anyone know?

I believe it's being released on the 26th. I might have to do some reading on this.

Zen, the iPhone is totally closed to developers, only Apple can make software for it. As for making games for phones, it's not hard, the only issue is that generally you have to port your game for different types of phone. Nokia and Sony Ericcson are fairly similar but have different screen size, Motorola tends to have lower heap size etc. Porting is the bane of all mobile phone developers.

Ahh crud!

Not even browser based java apps? how could they possibly close that off? Guess it' akin to some issues i had with the PSP, as you could only code for buttons that mimicked the mouse.

It's not totally closed - Apple are allowing developers to create Web-based apps which will apparently "just work" without an SDK.

Oh yes, that's right, they allow you to write Ajax apps which can't really do much anyway, and you need an internet connection to use... oh right, no decent speed internet either because there's no 3G support.

Yeah, Java and some free SDKs will make games and applications for your mobile, but you need to use really old versions to ensure compatibility with the most phones. We made network PDA games at uni, but it's essentially the same on the mobo phone, just normally slightly more limited java and smaller screen.

If you wanted to get into the game making industry and make money through indie titles, I reckon mobo games would be your best bet. Significantly easier to make, a much larger market available, and plenty of distributors out there who can distribute your game at almost zero cost to them (so they're more likely to sign you up).

Yep, I posted a while back about this being our best chance of getting a commercial game going (as in bedroom coder). At least it is for a while until the standards and effects are raised through the roof like what happened in the PC game industry. Not really a chance in hell you will be making Doom 4 on your own (or even with your mates) for example, but there is a much much much better chance you could make Midnight Pool 2 (my favourite mobile game - ooh, must look to see if they have made a sequel).

Cheers

Yeah, I was fairly addicted to Ronnie O'Sullivan's Snooker. Great for when you're too knackered to sit at the computer, and the tele is crap, or indeed ... when you're having a ... you get the idea. Great little game. Very easy to make on DBP. Would be more of a technical challenge in Java on a mobo phone, but still attainable. People are happy to play some real rubbish on their phones too, so a half decent formula would work.
