Hello everyone im almost at the point where ive saved enough for a new pc which I would like to build myself. I have a pretty good idea of what components I want but I am having trtouble deciding on what type of psu I need. Heres what Ive come up with thus far:

Processor: core 2 duo e6700 or e6600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115002

Motherboard: foxconn 680i motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186113

Graphics card(not sure yet depends on how much I have to spend):
Either a 8800gts or 8600

8800gts:http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16814127278
8600gts:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130086

ram:

These are the ones I was looking at:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227190

As for a hard drive and disk drive I have already picked them out.

case:

As for the last case it comes with a 500w psu but I don't know whether it would be ok for my build and im figuring it is pretty cheap. But what I really need to know is what kind of psu I should look for and any comments you have in my current parts list. I really want to keep it as close to or under $1100 as possible but id be willing to save a little more if I really had to. Thanks!

The trick to PSU's is getting one that is beefier than the total calculated wattage needed. About a year ago my 430 watt psu died so I went and got this one: http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=26500

Its whisper quiet, it has dual fan thru design, secondary fan only kicks in when needed, but the best part is there's no main braid of wires coming out of the unit. It comes with rounded cables that connect on both ends, one side to the psu, one side to the device. You only need to connect the ones you need, eliminating extra unused dangling cables which restrict air flow, and can be dangerous. It comes with all the standard molex types, extensions, and even has the nice fancy SATA power connections which was perfect for me since I have twin WD SATA drives in the system.

Like I said this was about a year ago, it seems they have added new versions on their site, but that link above is to my particular unit. Go to thier product section to see their more current units.

good luck

edit: btw, this brand/model was available retail at compusa but I am sure you can web order, or walk-in to a shop. I was lucky that saturday morning that I was able to buy this that day, not ruining a gaming weekend by having to web order and wait

I will definetly look into that! I was just browsing new egg and I found this and im figuring its not that good but it appears many bought it and worked fine plus it has two pcie connectors. But someone said it can't run an 8800gtx will it be enough for the gts? I really don't want to spend that much but I still want a nice power supply. Is this a good option? here is the link:

Looks ok for the price range. Be sure to double check the power consumption that your video card requires, and that youre not running right on the edge when all the devices in your system are powered up. 500W seems like it should be enough but double check. Also always try and consider possible additional devices in the future, like you may add a HD or some other device, it would suck to find out that the new device tipped you past the power threshold.

Ok I will look at that. I found this test for how big of a power supply you need and it read about 400w so I think ill be okay with a 500w. Anyways if anyone has any comments or suggestions on parts it would be very appreciated. Thanks!

When I recently built a PC for my parents, the PCI cards' screws did not line up with the holes on the casing and there had to be some.... modification. Don't expect everything to be just dandy on the first try.

If you use http://www.alternate.nl, your comp will be adjusted to the motherboard etc, and the final order (do not buy from alternate) can be used to buy a good computer. The only thing is that is is dutch. But you could use babelfish (google it) to translate.

Cheers

i recommend to get something over 500w psu, the 8800 takes a lot of power and if your looking to upgrade in the future (HDD's and such) u might want to get another PSU
id go with a 700w myself

My case has a 650w right now you make sure its SLI ready PSU too, or else you might be buying a new one in the near future

I will definetely take that into consideration. I am currently looking at an sli 550w. I am not planning on going sli for quite a while so I should be fine. Anyways does anyone have a recomandation for a case. I am looking for one preferably around $100 or lower but with good cooling. I am really considering an antec 900 gaming case but everyone seems to love it or hate it. Thanks!

Just get a case. It doesn't matter. As long as it looks like swiss cheese on the back, it'll stay cool.
