Ive been spending the last month getting prepared to start up a small skateboard manufacturing company for the summer. I have all of the materials and supplies ready, except I got some false information on the pricing for wooden veneer sheets. Each skateboard has about 7 sheets of maple sugar veneer, but right now Im settling for pretty much any type of wood I can get.

The sheets are usually around 8 inches wide, and 32 inches long.

The current pricing Ive found is for rolls of birch veneer that are long enough for 3 sheets, costing about 15 dollars per roll. Thats racking up to 45 dollars just for 1 deck's wood, and to add to the problem, the sheets are too thin.

So, does anyone know of a company that sells wooden veneer sheets in bulk for a relatively cheap price? The only place ive found so far is home depot, which doesnt have the prices or dimensions Im needing.

<edit>

I need the thickness of the sheets to be about an 8th of an inch, a little thinner is ok though.

Thanks,

I was going to say Home Depot but nvm, you already tried there . I'm not sure, maybe Lowes or True Value, but I doubt True Value would have anything like that.

EDIT: You might be able to find a distributor who sells decks in bulk, unless you'd rather just make the decks yourself. Who will you use for trucks?

I dont plan on selling completes, just the decks themselves, with the option of having them gripped for an extra buck.

what Ive been looking for is companies closer to the raw material portion that will be able to sell them in bulk. Ive been emailing dozens of companies, skateboard magazines, and skateboard business advisors to get as much info as I can.

From what Ive found its turning into a bit of a war in terms of blank decks vs quality ones. Birch blanks are being made by the hundreds in China and being shipped over to the U.S / other countries, and the sales in blanks vs quality pro decks has been increasing dramatically.

Originally I was trying to get blank decks in bulk, but the quality of blank decks is so poor, it isnt worth it. If Im going to sell them, I want them to last more than a week, which means Ill need to make them myself. (Pro decks can go for 200 dollars, theres no chance of buying pro decks in bulk).

You can look at Rockler.com; I've bought wood from them several times. They have veneer sheets 6" or 10" x 36", $2 or $3 respectively. I don't know the thickness. They sell basically to furniture-making hobbyists, none of whom would use sugar maple, but the available veneers include regular maple, birch, etc. You probably have to call to learn the thickness, and don't expect much thickness because these veneers are meant merely to surface a solid thick substrate. What you are up to is more frequently described as laminate construction, not veneering. Similar to plywood (in which each sheet is cross-grain to the adjoining sheet).
