I don't think its a case of who is better, they both have done a wide variety of films, but spielberg IMO is more aimed at a family audience, (with the exception of a few of course) and Ridley is more of a horror genre type guy, both are good in there own way. In all honesty i prefer Spielbergs films, but i don't think thats to do with his directing, rather the script.

Spielberg FTW! Every film he directs is really awesome, and has such a wide variety, i.e. War of the World, and The Terminal, heheh. I personally think he's plain genius.

You left out "Raiders of the Lost Ark", my favorite adventure film of all time! I prefer Spielberg, but both are good.

Neither of them hold a candle to James Cameron.

Alien was good. Aliens was SO much better. The Terminator trilogy.. ahh, awesomeness. He even wrote the brilliant Strange Days.

Definitely my favourite director.

It's an unfair question for me, because I'm a huge fan of war movies. In one hand, you have what many war-flick buffs consider to be the greatest war movie of all time: Saving Private Ryan. In the other, you have Blackhawk Down, which is oh-so-awesome to watch right before you go into a few rounds of DC . But then I guess Spielberg finishes him off... Band of Brothers was done by Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Eh, I guess Spielberg wins.

I don't know, Alien was so orignal when it came out. Aliens was good when it came out but wasn't as eye opening as alien. But that was then and this is now. I suspect if you got a random guy off the street who had never heard of either he'd probably think aliens is better.

But it was soooo AWESOME! Have you seen the special edition? all they did was put the deleted scenes back in, but it was REALLY ALLOT better! (and thats saying something)

Aliens is my all time favourite film (And he directed the best cop-buddy movie ever, Point Break), but definately Ridley Scott over Spielberg for me, I'm a glutton for bleak futuristic settings I suppose.

Seriously agreed. One just has to watch the last half of Titanic to see his brilliance. Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, etc.

But between Spielberg and Scott, I'd have to say Scott. I can't stand a majority of Spielberg's movies as he always throws family, Hollywood-style endings into the otherwise good movies. Look at A.I., a great movie--- until the happy touchy feely ending. Kubrick was turning in his grave, let me tell you. Scott on the other hand does amazingly bleak movies that are more realistic in the sense--- he even did that cool Apple commercial from the early 80s (with the woman running down the middle of a theatre and destroying the IBM overlord )
