I've recently noticed that something is constantly using about 550-600 MB of ram. Is this caused by Vista? I've tried setting the theme to Windows Classic, but it doesn't help at all. Because I've only got 1 gig of ram, the 600 megs that are being used leave me with less than 500 megs. Any suggestions on how to free up some ram?

ya, if you read on the box, it says minimum requirements for vista: 512 Mb RAM recommended is 1 Gb, but having 2 Gb is better

Yup, Vista is a ram hog matey, one reason why I don't wanna upgrade to it - though I have been told that Windows finds all the ram it wishes to use and uses it when availible to make things run smoother, so no doubt if you ran a game that needs the ram, it won't be overly instrusive as no doubt Windows will let you have some of its used ram. Like for example my computer (512mb ram) running XP will use up 250 ram - after playing a game that uses more ram I can have 300 - 400mb free afterwards.

[edit]
Though perhaps a 1gb required game would run better on XP than Vista I wonder as overall vista is more of a ram hog despite what I've just said as XP and Vista do need ram to run behind your games.

Open the Task Manager, then click the Performance tab. The amount of RAM shown to be cached is essentially free, it's just that Windows has loaded the applications it has noticed you use often.
