Y'know, he may also want to dig up a copy of QBasic to go over the really easy stuff that is standard to most BASICs. GW-BASIC is good, if you want to go old-school.
It is not officially abandonware, but MS does not seem to be shooting folks for posting QB on the net (I'm too lazy to dig out the disks that came with my old 286, 486, or p1, so I just DL it).
QB 4.5 is the best total version.
Almost anything that you learn in QB will carry over to DB, except for some of the file system stuff, and obviously the 3D commands.
You may have a little trouble running it with 2000/XP (I didn't, but I am told otherwise by others). If you do, try to hunt up the WOWEXEC program that they use to run 16-bit DOS and Win 3.1 apps.
