My girlfriend and I have just returned from a 2 week holiday to Scotland. We stayed for 1 week in a Lodge in Arden (South West of Loch Lomond, just North West of Glasgow). We did a few sight-seeing things there like The Trossachs tour. We then did B&B's all the way up to Inverness (and drove through Inverness when we realised it was just like any other city) and then back down view the Cairngorm area via Avimore, Perth and Stirling.

I didn't wanna leave. I drove 700 miles in total around Scotland and didn't hit ANY traffic jams. The scenery was unbelievable. I cant believe I've lived in England for 25 years and not realised I had all that "on my doorstep" (if a 6 hour train ride from London Euston is doorstep).

We stayed in this lodge for the first week..

I've blogged about my scottish holiday and my girlfriend and I also have a Flickr Group up...

EDIT: Here is a taster...

You don't even have to go far as Scotland to see some great countryside, just keep away from major cities is all you really need to do, Kent's got some fairly nice places to look at, which was our camping holiday this year, last year was Sussex and before that was Cotteswolds/Gloucestershire. Derby and the lake district are pretty awesome too. But it's a shame as you're close to urban parts and can have traffic jams.

Though, I've always wanted to go to Scotland, Ireland and Wales (being born in Wales doesn't count, as 'the hell am I going to remember it?)

I live in Kirkcaldy, home town of Gordon Brown, but I've covered most of Scotland over the years, it's a damn pretty country huh!.

A few months ago I went Kayaking in Aviemore (river Spey), great place to visit.

Too right. I grew up on Anglesey. There is nothing there either...

Technically this isn't on Anglesey (on the main land), but it's the reason why we very rarely get snow (managed to just about make a snowman in that year in the 80's where everywhere else had like 15 foot drifts).

See, absolutely nothing...

I commuted to Aberdeen from London for a couple of years. Used to fly up on Monday and come back Friday. I worked for a couple of companies around Aberdeen and stayed in various hotels around Banchory and Westhill. Skived off sometimes and drove around the area. Lovely hills and rivers. Looks great when covered in snow and boy, it could really snow! A few times it was touch and go whether planes would fly in or out at all. Couple of times had to divert to Edinburgh and get a coach.

Shame Scotland is so far away from 'down South' otherwise I would go there more often.

Boo!

Many people think London is England, they need to get out more, I live near the Lake District, a walk around Scafell Pike or Helvellyn is nice, it's legend to take a friend/wife you don't like much and they accidentaly fall off the Striding Ridge.

It's not very wide and when the clouds come in low and you cannot see the 1000ft+ drop on either side it can be fun

Erm, yes... perhaps you mean to add "and that's it", or "just London is England", or "England is just London".

Oh, and yeah, Snowdonia is always a laugh in the winter. The difficult climbing side routinely used to get experienced English climbers freezing to death because they misjudged it.

England does have a lot of great scenery, but it's very different from the Scottish highlands. I mean a hill is a hill, a mountain is a mountain, but often when your standing on top of one in Scotland you can look around and see no civilisation for miles, it's that eerie solitude that makes it special IMO. You might think that Scotland has a reasonable tourist industry, but it's still damn easy to find your own hill. Having all that space in front of you and having to share it with no one is a great feeling - I know a lot of people who are simply addicted to hill walking and climbing in the highlands.

I was thinking of go to South France next year on holiday, but as I'll be going to Derby uni, the lake district really isn't that far from there, plus there's the peak district.

All this reminds me of that film The Englishman Who Walked Up A Hill and Came Down a Mountain (old b/w version was best)

1917 Garth Mountain (was called Garth Hill) where all the Pentyrch villagers, in South Wales, took up rocks to give it that extra little bit of height needed to be classed a mountain

My great uncle was in an old b/w movie years ago. He was this Welsh sheppard in south Wales (probably around 1940 at a guess). Was one of those small movies that used to start before the main film. God, even I'm old enough (just) to remember those...

I went to Scotland for my honeymoon. Stayed in a small cabin near Loch Ness and then a little more time in Inverness. Beautiful place.

On the way down we swung by Glasgow... I found it to be a fairly lively place but obviously very metropolitan and "uneven" (as in good areas, bad areas) and therefore not at all "ye ol' Scotland" type.

I have vague plans for World Domination

During the first two weeks of April we went on an Outward Bound course up north. We climbed two mountains. First one sucked, the weather was bad, my feet hurt, etc etc. Second time, the weather was amazing, the mountain was a great climb, and the view was incredible. When you looked out you could just see this huge hazy blue ocean of mountains. Simply spectacular.

Im off to the Lake District tomorrow (I've been before), I'm doing my DofE Gold.

Going round/over/up Hellvelyn and Scarfell Pike I believe. Last time I went, however, I couldn't do Striding Edge...damn vertigo...
