Except the ludicrous cost of Microsoft OSs, and the fact XP still does the job fine. In my case, I also use a lot of indie apps that I doubt would run on Vista - specifically music/sound apps.

While I'm not a Vista hater, I really can't see the point in upgrading unless you're gagging for DX10 (which I'm not yet). I think everyone is just jumping on the band wagon, as usual. I don't see any benefit in going Vista for some time yet.

Fallout, im not saying you should go out and buy a copy of vista right away, but if you go out of your way to not get vista, thats just silly.

I've got nothing against Vista, but I don't want to put it on my current comp. Technically I have it, but I want to wait until I get a new computer in a year. By then there will be some service packs, and I might actually have a reason to need X10.

The last thing I need at this moment is to learn and configure a new os.

@SageTech - Fair play. I wouldn't recommend people avoid it either. If you're getting a new OS, Vista makes sense. I just don't see the point in buying it to replace XP, when XP with SP2 works fine these days.

Urm, how do you turn off the "are you sure you want to..." warning. I have no idea where to go in vista to turn it off for my brother, as every thing seems to have been moved around to make things harder to accomplish.

msconfig tools tab, or you should be able to get to it from control panel -> Security Center -> Other Security Settings.

Hey! I held out buying XP for at least two years claiming there was nothing wrong with Windows 98

I must ask, is Vista really worth it just yet (with my uni laptop upgrade thought)? I mean I've heard its a bit unstable and ram hungry and quite incompatible with old software. I've made friends with XP after a while of bickering and hate but XP is doing well for me, though I am using free/trial security and my 'XP is an eye sore problem' has been solved and with my recent ram upgrade I'm beginning to be happy with its performance.

I heard that you need 2-4 gb ram to get it running well with 3D intensive app, I also heard that someone with 1gb ram got the FPSCX10 tech demo running smoothly at 70fps. I'd be happy running 1gb ram with Vista as long as it doesn't have annoying security, is stable and uses ram to my best advantage. (meaning the ability to run games that require 1gb on XP like Rainbow Six Las Vegas)

Keeping in my dream of actually upgrading my computer after 6 years. Though I should really wait for SP1, but knowing me, it will probably be out before I get a new comp. As I have been aiming to get one for a while and have failed to get a job in order to do so, luckily with uni, I'll have to get one, otherwise I'll starve.

I didn't read over all the reviews, but here's mine

-Home Basic
-Nada, came with new computer
-32 bit
-100gig HD, 512 MB RAM, (Haven't found graphics card info yet, will edit when I do, dunno where to look), Intel Celeron D 3.46Ghz
-Desktop
-Runs well most of the time, but occassionaly runs slow for reasons unknown(no virus/spyware etc, latest McAffee finds nothing), but the slow run is really occassional. The only problem I have had, which is a big one, is that it won't run over half of the executables I've gotten. Sometimes making a batch file to run them works, but sometimes it doesn't. When programs do run, it asks if you're sure at least twice, sometimes more, and if you say you trust it, it asks you again for allowing it to access the web. Any setup program I run tends to take a while to get started, especially if it is over 50mb in size(I'm talking I click it, tell Vista OK after it thinks for 5 minutes, then I wait another 15, when I moved on to something else, the setup pops up). I'm no OS genius user, so these may all be problems that I can fix. But god it is annoying.
-Wanted to get it after trying a Beta in my Computer Tech class, it came with the new PC.
-If this were my computer, I would have downgraded to XP Pro ages ago. I find XP to be much more friendly to me, I know how to use it, and it doesn't make me angry when I try to run things.

If you wish to turn all those warning sighns off, you do that in msconfig (I don't have Vista, so I don't know where in msconfig or anything, but I read RalphY's latest post).

Vista will not run a *lot* of games, just warning you.

Yeah, Microsoft's notion of backwards compatibility is to act very backwards and forget about compatibility. I sold a bunch of games on ebay years ago, partly because half of them couldn't make the compatibility jump from '98 to XP.

Smooth as a whistle. I haven't had any problems with windows Vista. All my software has run. The UAC only pops up when you try to install a program, access certain settings such as: firewall settings, user account settings, and other important settings. It also pops up when trying to access another user's files. I haven't found it annoying at all.

Because it was the latest gadget and I could afford it! I really like new and cool things.

I would have a mac.

Please don't try to throw in the word Mac or Linux into a discussion about Windows...why? It'll start one of those bloody computer vs computer debates. It's understandable why there is a lack of compatibility. But if you think of the customer, you will want the operating system to be as convenient as possible so they can be happy and runs all of the programs they need. Personally, I wouldn't want to use Vista if all my programs didn't work to their potential and then comes the dilemma when I want something that'll only run on Vista. Though that's hypothetically speaking, aside from certain games, I think all the programs I use will work.

Yah didn't need to change all of it. It was really all that harmful, just that if anyone paying attention could say 'well actually...' and it could have started one of those debates as they do.
