After spending 2 hours pouring through the forums for transparency info, I'm putting out a plea. I'm looking for a step by step walkthrough of how to create transparency in a texture.

I'm using Photoshop CS but will use Gimp if it's easier. And I'm using MagicFPS to make my segments. Most of the info people have posted in the past is very incomplete. They tell you create an alpha channel, but there's more to it than that. Some posts also say that Photoshop doesn't save alpha in TGA format. But TGA and Jpeg are the preferred formats for MagicFPS.

Other postings claim that you just need to have true black (RGB 0,0,0) in your image and that's all.

I'd appreciate any help.

well i no how to do it with adobe photoshop

download the nvidia .dds plugin

you can then save .dds textures that are transparent, its what i use for my huds.

- Downloaded the plugin.
- Created a new file with transparency as the background.
- Pasted my image in.
- Selected a square in the middle and deleted it to show the transparency.
- Saved it as dds.

The texture showed white where the transparency should be.
There are a lot of options with saving as dds. Should I
have changed something from the defaults?

You need to have black in the background.

no with the nivida plugin


you need to set the properties as follows


in the drop down bar set it to 8.8.8.8 ARGB 32bpp | unasigned


do what you did before, removing the piece of your texture to show the transparent background and now save it as a .dds file


if you open the file itself after saving in adobe it will have a white background but use it in FPSC it will be transparent.

If you use the Gimp here's how you can do it.
Select the area that you want transparant.
Add a layer mask.
Apply the layer mask.
Save as .dds (if you downloaded the plugin.Since it's free...what the heck...get it).
Do pay attention to the options when adding a layer mask.If the option you picked doesn't add the right one (there are several options) then just use the edit function to undo and try the next one.
I do believe that you would select the "selection" and the "invert mask" options.You might also check this out...

Uthink, transparency is a pointless thing unless you want an invisable wall. You will not be able to see it. I think you want translucent which has form but you can still see thorugh it.

I just want sections transparent. For items such as chain link fencing etc. Translucent implies that you're viewing through a material. I actually don't want any material to be there. Like a hole in a wall.

True black (0,0,0) only works in formats such as Bitmap.

Transparency is very easy in GIMP if you start your image with a transparent background, then the first (background ) layer is completely transparency.

EDIT: Come to think of it, same in photoshop. I'm still getting used to PS again, I have it on my laptop not my desktop (aka that thing that sits in the closet 90% of the year )
