Hello All,
I've been working on this for about a month, and I finally got it far enough along to put out a little demo. It is a terrain system that uses real USGS terrain height data. Not from heightmaps, but actual floating point height values. This demo is a section of the Grand Canyon, in Arizona. It uses no textures, but gets its coloring by setting the vertexdata diffuse color for each vertice, based on height. This terrain is very high resoulution, the actual scale is 1 unit = 1 meter. If you've ever seen 3DEM, think of that, but you can fly around with ease.
Here is a screenshot. You can download the demo at this thread:

1.5 million polys and 57 FPS isn't that bad in my opinion If my computer could do that, I'd be damn happy!

UPDATE:
I have added some more features, most notably the ability to walk on the entire terrain. I challenge you to find the 10 DBPro primitives spread out around the terrain.

Please visit this thread to try the demo, and any and all comments greatly appreciated.
