positive:
-increased hand-eye coordination
-u use ur brain more, helps you solve problems and stuff

negative:
-games are bad for unstable people(but they are already unstable, so you can't blame the game for something bad the person does)
-bad for your eyes? this hasn't been proven, but many people think it affects your eyes.

I think the radiation from the screen damages your retina (in your eye). Don't quote me on that, even to correct me

They give you ideas for programming
They are seriously educational, I knew nothing about basketball until I played NBA Live, now I know loads and I love it!
I think computer games will be central to education in the future, we had a little archaeology game when I was in school it was quite fun and you learned too.

Your sig was erased by a mod because it's larger than 600x120
I didn't know about that rule and it was 659 x 126!
Isn't that a little OTT? I'm gonna have to re-make it because of 65 pixels!!!

quoted you-lol

but seriously, firstly, I believe if you use a CRT monitor it does give off radiation but LCD screens don't. Also, the common myth that sitting very close to a video game (or tv show/movie) hurts your eyes. This is false and it actually makes no difference how close you are.

The negative affects are usually physical for the most part (ie, not moving as much, eye sensitivity because of the bright monitor, ect).

The physiological effects are ridiculous. Any one who is sent on a killing spree because of a FPS is most likely unstable to begin with.

i have another one: video games do NOT cause obesity as some people think if someone can't go and exercise or eat healthy, NOT THE GAME'S PROBLEM!

EDIT: another: i dont believe gaming should be considered a physical addiction like some physcologists think. they are just crazy... its just a mental addiction that someone can have with anything.

That's true Dr Manette.
So the question is, do we really need more triggers for those unstable minds?

I'm unique, just like everybody else.

Yes.

Better to have a virtual trigger to release frustration than a real-life trigger, right?

Actually with LCD's your suppose to have a back light or at least a light on when viewing a CRT or LCD viewing them in the dark for extended periods of time can ruin your eye sight im living proof...

Never needed glasses until i started playing video games of course it took years to damage my eyes but it has happend and i keep viewing my CRT/LCD's in the dark =P by time im 80 i bet i'll be blind LOL.

No scientific proof of this that im aware of, i just notice that this happend after playing games heavily on PC for years.

I have to disagree. I have to sit back from my monitor to comfortably use it, particularly when playing games. It might not hurt your eyes - but it hurts my eyes.

According to an article I read on MSN news, it strains your eyes which can make them hurt temporarily, but causes no permanent damage, that's just an old wives tale.

To be honest, the "release anger and frustration" thing you're supposed to get from games never really did it for me. I'd simply play the game and have fun...though there are other ways to get things of your chest, video games just weren't really it for me.

Did anyone here honestly let out real anger shooting people in video games? Or did the usual night at the bar with friends do that? Just out of curiosity.

There were in fact many games that actually made me angrier...but that's the old 2d stuff.

Good Effects: Educational, good for hand-eye coordination and reflexes, in some cases socializing.

Bad effects: If used in extremes, addicting, de-socializing, can lead to severe problems.

My fingers are completely wrecked due to the Spectrum keyboard, I can bend them in weird ways and they lock up all the time, stretched tendons I think. I blame miner willy, I have Miner Willy syndrome.

I think for most people they don't realise the affects that games have on them, because we've been playing so long now that it's ingrained into our personalities. Put this way, the people I know who don't play videogames drink a lot - you have to do something to unwind, and given the easily accessible options, well gaming is a pretty healthy and positive way to unwind and spend time with friends. Some of the best times I've had in my life involved playing videogames (usually involved a large bottle of vodka as well mind you!).

We're going down... in a spiral to the ground...

You have never heard of Fake (What its called when you dont see so good at far...)..

It means that your eyes are stressed by wathcing too long close and at same place.. This can be cured tough.. By keeping +glasses or doing eye training and going outside always you can

The -Glasses what optican or someone else gives you just makes this fake thingy badder... But if you like seeing cleary with those -glasses. They recommend you to keep them only when neccessary and if you can find less power -glasses using them is reccomended..

But the radiosity of CRT monitor or TV do hurt eyes..

I have this Fake (What its called when you dont see so good at far...) and my eyes have got better when i found article about this thing and followed the instructions. This really helps. I can be almost always now without glasses and im glad of it.. Glasses really affect on my personatity..

Basically, I agree with all of that. Increase hand-eye coordination is true - a friend of mine proved that in a dissertation he did at uni. Anything that engages your brain in problem solving is gonna sort your noggin out - i.e. games.

It's also been shown that psychos can take inspiration from games and make them go even more mental, but as has been said, it doesn't affect mentally stable people. And yeah, it's bad for your eyes - I know for a fact since I get bad eye-floaters (black specs floating around on your vision) and bad eye-strain whenever I play games for a long period of time, but they clear up when I stay off the computer for a day or so (which is rare!). Also physical fitness and RSI type injuries.

So I'd say game playing is bad for your health, but good for your brain.

A CRT TV or monitor won't damage your eyes unless your really close. The Electrons will loose energy at a certain distance away from the screen.
Most of the electrons will be absorbed by the florescent plate anyway.

The old wives tale says that if you sit too close to the TV you will get square eyes. Some element of truth, as you should sit too close as instead of square eyes you will undoubtedly get eye cancer.

However Short-Sightedness (Myopia), is not caused by radiation from the Beta source.
By viewing objects close to you for a prolonged period, you are working the Ciliary muscles in your eye. And everybody knows what happens when you give your muscles a work out. They become stronger and more tight. This changes the shape of the lens permanently and actually sets you in short sighted mode because your lens is now focused to view close objects as the muscles are so tight. I think this is correct anyway. It may also be true that the lens can flatten if stretched too much.

This is true for any near work. Eg reading
