Hey all,

I just finished an absolutely hectic dev cycle at work, and I'm happy to say the next few commercial games I've worked on are coming out to stores this month. Madden 08 Wii (Front End Programmer) and PSP (Lead Front End Programmer). I've had a lot of fun programming on these, but I definitely need a good break.

That being said:

I'm off to Beijing on Wednesday to go on my first trip to Asia. From there, on Saturday I'll be flying into Pyongyang, North Korea for a week-long tour of their capital city. I will be under strict control with absolutely no access to the outside world (no cell phones, no computers, no internet, no international TV, no passport, etc.), so I won't be posting here during that time.

Afterwards I'll be back in Beijing again for about 5 days, where I'll be back in a "free" society again (if you can call it free). From there I'll be able to pop into a cafe once in a while if I can find one, and I'll check in here if I feel like it. I will be alone (my wife isn't going with me), in a large city with tons of things to see (Forbidden City, great wall, Tera Cota soldiers, etc.), so I might not get the urge to go online.

Anyways, have a good next few weeks. I will be here from time to time until Wednesday, but I'll be mainly focusing on packing, buying clothes, tour guide gifts, etc. Plus I have to do a lot of stuff to make sure my wife is ok without me while I'm gone.

When I come back I'll post all of my pictures on my site for consumption

I hear Kim Jong Il makes everyone walk on there knees, so he is taller than everyone, so I'd pack some knee-pads

Just kidding.

Have fun beyond the red curtain. I wasnt aware that North Korea was a tourist hot-spot. Whats up with going there?

Wouldn't surprise me .

It isn't a tourist hotspot. American's aren't even allowed in . I guess the appeal is the incredible isolation that the country is kept in, even though that just disgusts me .

Anyways, have fun, it would be interesting to compare places like that to a western civilization .

Nice, good to hear you're getting a break

Are you allowed to say what parts of the programming you did on the games (like, specifics, other than just "Front End")?

Also, are you still under contract so you can't make your own games, or talk about private projects?

I'll look for your name in the credits.

I'm still waiting for some of the companies I'm working with to make a "big" game. After I left Irrational a while ago it's been hard trying to get a job at another company.

Your signature has been erased by a mod because it's too big--- 300k!?

Well, my role was one of the guys who programmed all of the screens with menus, buttons, etc. There is an incredible amount of depth in that game, so there is a lot we have to touch.

Yah, for as long as I work here I won't be able to make my own games, regardless of whether they'll be freeware or not It really sucks, because I have little to no motivation to work on anything on the side if nobody will see it anyway. I understand that this is something most software companies require their employees to adhere to.

Nice, so you got your hands a bit dirty on this one? Sweet.

Well, if you can't make the games, and release them, use the next few years, or however long you plan to work there, to write documents. Flesh out your idea's. Follow the standard design process. Then, when you get out of contract, you can start actually making them, and it'll all be so much easier

Take it easy, peoples! I'm going to bed and leaving early in the AM tomorrow. Nervous as hell (with a nagging feeling that I'm forgetting something). Had a bit of a scare with the weight of my luggage, as they don't allow people to fly into DPRK with baggage over 20kg, but my bag is just 20lbs! *phew* (and before anyone says--- no I didn't pack everything in my whole closet--- 20lbs is pretty light considering the suitcase itself weighs about half that! I'm banking on the fact that I can buy some odds and ends in Beijing before the flight into DPRK)

Bye!
