It really only needs 512.. If you plan to run games, 1gig.. Which is what I'm currently running on.

Pff, one of those reasons that everybody says but nobody knows why There's no reason to wait for a service pack, it runs just fine^.^ Far better than I believe XP had when it first arrived.

I don't have vista, but I think it doesn't seem to be that bad. Just as every other os out there, it has good sides and bad sides.

I talked to this computer guy, who once got brand new vista with 512 mb RAM, and he told me it was the slowest computer he had ever seem. And it was brand new.

Could have been for other issues. Was he running a lot of background programs, did he have his swap file improperly configured, was his video card taking 128 - 256mb of that ram?

I was able to do web development and image editing all at the same time without an issue.

You want slowest computer ever, try running xp on 128 mb of ram I know slow computers!

The only reason I upgraded to a gig of ram was because LOTRO kept slowing way down inside cities.

He works with computer all the time, so I think he knows what he's talking about. That computer needed more RAM. But you might be right about the computer haveing meny background things going on, or mayby the vidoecard thing. I don't know so much about it. He only told me it was the slowest thing he had ever seen.

He's not the only one that works on computers I'm saying, as a fact, from personal experience, vista can handle 512mb of ram just fine.

In fact I just installed vista on a computer for a friend this last week with only 512mb, and her computer is running it with no slow down.

@Mr X: Vista can run on 256 if you use the 98 style theme, and disable UAC, and a bunch of the worthless services. It will be slow because 256 is the old age ram amount, but it is runnable.

Time is ticking away.

@Steve J
I figured 256 MB RAM would make software run quicker, especially with a Windows 98 theme. Well, whatever you probably know more about that stuff than me.

@OBese87 & CGJ (Mainly OBese87)
Okay, A, Xbox isn't bad. Especially considering you could easily make your own games for it! And yes, I have had an xbox, and enjoyed it rather much... That is until I got interested in how it worked, and accidently broke the CD drive... Either way, it was fun and enjoyable. PS1/PS2 (PS3 assumably) are also very fun, but that's no reason to say an XBOX sucks (Which internally you know you are saying). Wii is fun too... Console wars are STUPID. I mean, do people really have that little life? To argue about which console is better? Even though the console will be obsolete in a year or two.... I'm defending this because I have the time, and it is worth telling, UNLIKE which console is better... Giving an oppinion about what you like is fine, but you damn well shouldn't go against another's oppinion on the matter of something so stupid! With that said, you may think the PS3 is good now, but in about 10 years you're gonna be boasting about some other console and making fun of people with a PS3. I know that I'm over reacting, but I want to prevent some other console discussion in a thread about Vista (Perhaps too early though).

Cheers,

Yeah, there's already a thread about consoles to take about that in...

How long do people think it will be until almost all new pc games require DX10? I ask because that will be the point when most of us who are holding back switch, I assume. After all, this is a gaming community (well, game programming, but that means most of us are gamers to some extent also).

Speaking of Vista, I'm actually getting it, I haven't seen any good argument not to, but I've made and seen some good arguments to. So, I'm gonna enjoy my DirectX 10 (After I get an ATI R600 (Dunno if it came out yet or not, but I want it)).

Cheers,

Edit: Plus if Vista doesn't work on this computer, the guy at the computer store said my computer, and ALL computers being sold there work with Windows Vista, so if it doesn't work, HELLO better computer.
