I've has a laptop sitting around that had it's screen broken and I was thinking about selling it for parts. I had sensitive data on the harddrive so that definitely needs to be taken care of before I sell it, and I do have programs that will do that for me. The problem is since the screen is broken, I now have no way of accessing the harddrive. Any ideas on what I should do? I guess my three options are: 1. Removing the harddrive and trying to connect it to another computer to erase data and then re-install it. 2. Remove the harddrive and sell the laptop as is. 3. Perhaps a computer shop might be able to clean the harddrive for me or just purchase it from me straight off.

So anyone have any other ideas how to go about this?

I'll buy it! $200 USD. (Price negotiable)

I'd go with number 2 for me buying it.

Are you able to hook it up to a regular monitor?

@Torsten
Shhhhh!!!! I want it!

@Epimetheus
Don't listen to Torsten, he's crazy.... Sell me your computer...

On a more serious note, if it does work, I'll still buy it from you.

@Aaron Miller

Lol, so intent are we? It's an HP Pavilion zv5000 with a cracked screen and some scratches. I'll probably be listing it on Ebay, so if you're interested send me an email and I'll email you the ebay link so you can look at the pictures and etc.

@Torsten

It does have an monitor output but I believe it needs to be configured on the actual computer before it will output from it.

Ok, I will when I list it.

On another note, I got the external monitor output working. And the computer is working fine, all I need to do now is wipe the Harddrive's blank space and I'll list it on Ebay.

That may be useful for my little brother. He needs a small PC that can connect to his (brilliant) TV.

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

Would it be out of place for me to ask you why you are so intent on buying a broken laptop?

As for accessing the hard drive that is very easy. Remove it form the case and purchase a laptop IDE to Desktop IDE converter. I've got one right here. You can just plug it into your desktop then and be done with it.

Alternatively you can purchase a cheap 2.5 inch USB drive caddy from ebay.That will avoid the need to open up your desktop. If you don't sell your laptop you can always keep the the laptop drive as a backup USB Drive. I've converted a number of old laptop and desktop drives in this way to creating rolling backup.

These things are not more then £10
