Hi all,

I'm doing some "home movie" video editing for my parents, the only problem is that the video won't import because the "codec cannot be found". So my question: does anyone know of a free MPEG-2 codec?

Thanks,
G2L

You know when a saw "home movie" in double quotes I automatically thought the obvious But then I saw "for my parents". Ewww. Bad image...

Oh, and google "codec". You normally find free packs of them here and there. There is always some film trailer that doesn't work, but normally you can find the codec, and they usually come in big packs with like dozens of different codecs. Also use the free utility GSpot to see video information if you have further problems (then google the codec it mentions).

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/

decodes everything. encodes everything. restricts itself so it only appears to certain applications, thus having no risk of messing any video file-using games up, as other codec 'packs' are apt to do. it's nice.

@Dazzag: After re-reading my post, I'll admit it does sound... well, you get the picture. And thanks for the help.

@blanky and PowerSoft: Thanks for the links, the TGC forum users never cease to amaze me.

The video has imported fast and zippy, even on this retarded Dell (Pentium 4 2.66 GHZ :::: 0.75 GB RAM) I've been forced to use.
