As a musician who has always been into technology,I absolutely love it.But I believe this is just taking the live scene to yet another level of boredom for the audience, you could easily fall asleep at a Kreftwerk gig in the early days, not that I dont like Kreftwerk to listen to,the more exciting musicians were those who could actually play a keyboard well.
This has recently developed into guy's who throw together a bunch of arpeggiated squeaks ands blips overlayed with some samples which they didn't record/play,these being the interesting hook.
Some of the more recent bands were even more boring to go see live,in fact I lasted 20 mins the last time I went to see Orbital, who rely heavily on their light show, most of it perched on their heads, and video graphics.
There has been a lot of good music produced by non-musicians over the years due to the advances in technology, but most would only appear on the bill with twenty other acts at an all nighter with the audience mostly so wasted they would only be interested in the pretty lights.
As an instrument to be used in recordings it wont stand out from even the most basic synth.I do however like the merging of music and art.
We are the robots.
