I know i've risen this question once previously, but I've started this topic because of the loads or recent mmorpg's I've recently seen in the making.

i think mmorpg's fail becos well where to start.

ok look at one of the big on-line games of all time Counter-Strike not a mmorpg or a Quake DeathMatch.it the way it set

1)you have to be in a team.
2)the game re-set to put evey one back at the start.
3)the missons are not to hard or easy

this force the plays to work in a team and to think about what there doing.

now what happns in a randow mmorpg you all have you own quests so no one real works in a team, you all re-sparn so where eles on the same map so you just go back there to get you stuf back so it all becos like a DeathMatch.

i not saying you have to base your game on the CS format you just think how to force the players in to like a RPG.

I think some mmorpg's fail because there maps are way to big.Now this may sound kinda stupid, but having a huge map
100s of miles wide(in the game world)you never get to meet people.
This doesn't even give you the chance to work as a team, or meet people.Maybe a mmorpg should be smaller, but not too small its crowded.Although some people enjoy exploring the huge worlds.
Just a thought.

Meridian 59 is cool. It was the first MMORPG ever (before they were called MMORPGs-- it was billed as a 'Graphical MUD') and it looks pretty neat.
