Hi Guys,

This is really annoying me, For a while now, windows explorer crashes and gives the "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." message.

Then The screen goes blank and then loads back up with all the programs I had open Apart from any windows explorers.

I've had several problems with my PC And thinking on reinstalling XP.

I'd like to hear if anyones had this problem and what they did to fix it, and your thoughts on reinstalling.

If Only you were Me, the you'd understand.

What type of curtain? Triple pleat?

Have you checked your disk for any errors? Your FAT could be corruped or something.

The file access table, it's basically a phone book for all your files. When you browse for files Windows polls this database for file listings and such, if explorer crashes then it's possible it was unable to read from it properly. This would most likely happen if your PC gets shut down during a write operation.

You can run 'chkdsk' from the command prompt via start/run, cmd, "chkdsk /f"

Have you run virus checks, Spyware checks, Hijack This, Registry cleaners, etc?

My "Computer Savvy" friend (I use 'savvy' very loosely), had a problem with his PC - Every time he'd right click on a folder, it would crash explorer.
Instead of running any checks, he wiped his harddrive and reinstalled windows. Come a week later when he needed his Uni work, he realized "Oh, I forgot to backup".
The same problem popped up again.

What was it?
Spyware.
I ran Spybot S&D's registry program, and voila! Fixed.
I installed a bunch of protection software onto his PC, and no problems since.

I don't know why people don't do this.
It's like leaving your front door wide open for anyone to walk in and do whatever the hell they want. You come home one day to find that your toaster is broken or missing, and instead of fixing the problem and replacing it, you knock down your house and build an exact replica with a new toaster. Meanwhile, you've left the front door open again.

It could be Nero or divx or something similar. When certain files are viewed these programs attempt to make a preview thumbnail of the files contents. Some versions of Nero caused problems in Windows Vista.

I have seen movie files cause this problem. I'm not sure if it's an attempt by somone to stop people using file sharing.

You need to go through DOS/Command prompt to delete them.

You can type long filenames by typing the first few letters then hitting the TAB key.

Also some long filenames with spaces in may need to be put into speach marks del "long file name with spaces in it.mpeg"
